According to the report at the meeting, the proportion of elderly people is increasing rapidly. In 2011, it reached 10% of the total population, bringing Vietnam into the period of population aging. It is forecasted that by 2025, Vietnam will have nearly 15 million elderly people, accounting for 14.8% of the total population; by 2038, the corresponding figures will be 22.3 million and 20.2%, meaning it has an “aging population”.
The need for elderly care is huge and increasing, but the ability of families to meet it is increasingly limited . This requires the formation of a network of elderly health care, mobilizing and effectively using social resources to develop human resources, elderly health care facilities, improve the quality of life, and adapt to population aging.

At the meeting, delegates listened to experts present a number of topics such as: Report on reviewing and analyzing the current situation and needs for care, support and promoting the role of the elderly in Vietnam; proposing solutions to develop a network of health care workers for the elderly in the community; report on reviewing and analyzing the current situation and proposing solutions to build and develop a network of health care facilities for the elderly suitable and adaptable to the rapid population aging rate in Vietnam...; draft detailed outline of the Project on building and developing health care workers for the elderly in the community and health care facilities for the elderly by 2030, with a vision to 2045.

Delegates discussed and gave comments and suggestions based on the practical situation of care and health protection for the elderly in Lao Cai province. The activity of collecting opinions aims to complete and improve the feasibility and effectiveness in implementing the "Project on developing health care workers for the elderly in the community and health care facilities for the elderly by 2030, with a vision to 2045".
