The origins of this festival date back to ancient Celtic festivals and Christian traditions marking the transition from autumn to winter and commemorating the souls of the dead.
Today, modern Halloween focuses on fun, community, and a touch of horror. It is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the world .
Origin and history of Halloween
The story of Halloween begins with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated more than 2,000 years ago in Ireland and Scotland. Samhain marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter, a time of year associated with darkness and death.
The Celts believed that the boundary between the world of the living and the spirit world became fragile on Halloween night. To ward off wandering spirits, people lit bonfires and wore masks to disguise themselves.
As Christianity began to influence Celtic lands, ancient beliefs about connecting with the dead gradually merged with Christian traditions. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought their customs to North America in the 19th century, where they evolved into modern customs such as trick-or-treating, Halloween parties, and carving pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns.
