VnExpressVnExpress18/01/2024

Japan Cherry blossoms begin to bloom from late March, reaching full bloom after about 8 days, and Kochi is the place where the flowers bloom the earliest.

The Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) released its forecast for the blooming period and peak blooming date of cherry blossoms nationwide last week, after conducting a survey of Yoshino cherry trees, Japan's most popular and famous cherry blossom variety, at about 1,000 cherry blossom viewing spots across the country. The forecast is also based on low temperatures in autumn and winter, the growth status of cherry trees, accumulated temperatures, and previous data for each region.

Accordingly, Kochi city on Shikoku island is the place where cherry blossoms bloom earliest, on March 18 and are in full bloom eight days later. Next are Fukuoka and Nagoya cities, where cherry blossoms are expected to start blooming on March 21 and be in full bloom on March 30 and March 31, respectively.

In Tokyo, cherry blossoms are expected to bloom on March 23 and reach full bloom on March 30. In Kyoto and Osaka, the flowers are expected to start blooming on March 23 and March 25, respectively. Residents and visitors to both cities are expected to be able to see the flowers in full bloom on April 1.

Meanwhile, further north, the blooming time will be slower, expected in early May. In Sapporo, the cherry blossoms will start blooming on May 2. May 6 is the expected date for full bloom in the capital of Hokkaido.

Cherry blossom season in Japan typically starts in late March to early April. In colder parts of the country, especially in the north, the season can be later. In March 2023, the number of tourists to Japan rose to its highest level since the Covid-19 pandemic, as people flocked to see the cherry blossoms for the first time after travel restrictions were eased.

According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, the number of foreign visitors to Japan for business and leisure purposes reached 1.82 million in March 2023, up 1.48 million from the previous month.
