Revealing clothing has never been accepted at the Cannes Film Festival before. Organizers have updated the dress code ahead of the 78th edition.
Specifically, the 2025 Cannes Film Festival introduced a ban with the content: "Nudity is prohibited on the red carpet as well as in any other area of the Film Festival".
After several models appeared topless on the Cannes red carpet in 2022 and rapper Kanye West's wife Bianca Censori crossed the line by appearing in a see-through dress at the Grammy Awards earlier this year, the Cannes Film Festival has issued a new statement.
"This year, the Cannes Film Festival has included in its statutes a number of rules that have long been in effect. The aim is not to regulate dress, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, within the institutional framework of the event and French law," the festival's new guidelines state.
The festival added that it reserves the right to refuse entry to individuals wearing bulky costumes (especially those with large tails) that may impede the movement of other guests or complicate seating arrangements in the screening room.

Over the past few years, Cannes has faced controversy over its red carpet dress code, such as requiring "elegant" shoes for evening screenings.
Some say the policy is unfair to women, because for years the definition of “elegance” has meant wearing high heels.
After all, according to The New York Times, nowhere is nudity more prevalent than in Cannes. The New York Times’s writer explains that this is where the Mediterranean, sunshine and disdain for artifice combine to create a tradition of liberating clothing.
The type of dress that looks like a thin or transparent layer of fabric, covering the bare skin or lingerie, is probably the most popular form of nude clothing today. High slit dresses and low necklines are also worn by many stars on the red carpet.
The nude look is also a popular style on the high fashion runways. Famous brands such as Saint Laurent, Tory Burch, Chloé, Tom Ford and Jean Paul Gaultier have all launched designs in this trend in recent years.

The New York Times believes that the new rule may be designed to prevent attention-grabbing stunts, like what happened at the Grammys earlier this year.
Kanye West and his wife Bianca Censori weren't actually invited to the event. But the couple dominated the headlines the next day, attracting more attention than the awards show itself.
In addition, through the new regulation, the Organizing Committee shows its desire to prevent the appearance of dresses that act as a form of performance art. Specifically, these dresses can attract attention and dominate conversations, which are focused on the films being introduced - the focus of the Festival.
In fact, there is no general formula for creating revealing dresses. Depending on the intentions of the designer, stylist and wearer, each outfit will have a different level of revealing.
