Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Bao Quoc informed that the enrollment of 10th grade students for the 2023-2024 school year reached 99% of the more than 77,000 enrollment targets needed at 108 public high schools.
With the remaining quota, Ho Chi Minh City will not recruit additional students or lower the admission score to ensure good implementation of student classification after secondary school and ensure education quality.
According to Mr. Quoc, if students fail to pass the 10th grade of public high schools, there are many other study options such as private high schools, vocational education centers, vocational colleges, and colleges with over 50,000 targets.
With the admission score being the sum of three exams: Math, Literature, and Foreign Language, Nguyen Thuong Hien High School takes the highest standard score for the first choice as 25.5, candidates need to achieve an average of 8.5 points for each subject to be admitted.
However, out of 108 schools, there are still 38 high schools with a standard score of less than 15 points (accounting for more than 1/3). Candidates only need less than 5 points/subject to enter public grade 10.
Notably, 7/37 high schools have a standard score for grade 10 of only 10.5 points, or more than 3 points/subject. The schools with this level include Trung Lap, Da Phuoc, An Nhon Tay, Can Thanh, Binh Khanh, An Nghia high schools, Thanh An secondary and high school. Compared to last year, the standard score for grade 10 of the 7 schools has not changed.
If we take the threshold of 12 points or less, the city has 16 schools in this group, only needing an average of 4 points per subject.
Some schools increased by 0.5-1 points compared to 2022 such as Nguyen Van Linh High School, Nguyen Van Tang High School, Binh Chanh High School for the Gifted in Sports. Schools with benchmark scores decreasing by 0.5-0.75 are Phuoc Kien, Quang Trung, Ngo Gia Tu.
These are all schools in the suburbs such as Can Gio, Nha Be, Cu Chi, Binh Chanh, and the old District 9. Many of these schools have less than 50% of their total enrollment.
Mr. Nguyen Bao Quoc commented that schools with low benchmark scores below 15 points are mostly located in suburban areas. Compared to the general level of the whole city, the quality of education in suburban areas is not high.
Mr. Bao said that this comes from many factors, including facilities, parents' investment in their children, staff quality, etc.
The Deputy Director of the Department said that the Department has given instructions, organized seminars, and shared to find solutions to gradually improve the quality of education in this area. In the coming time, the Department will continue to review, work, and directly direct, in order to gradually narrow the gap in the quality of education in the areas in the city.
The admission principle is that candidates who pass the highest wish will not be considered for the following wishes. Candidates must submit their admission application to the high school they have passed according to regulations, otherwise their names will be removed.
Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training requires high schools not to accept applications or process requests to change wishes.
