There is a great need for additional manpower.
Currently, many businesses in the city are in need of recruiting and employing personnel in the tourism industry. According to forecasts, by 2030, accommodation establishments in the city will need more than 1 million workers, not including travel agencies and other food and beverage service businesses. Therefore, the city needs to add an average of approximately 60,000 workers each year.
Despite the high demand, many businesses operating in the tourism sector – the "smokeless industry" in the area – are still struggling to find personnel to meet their business needs. Mr. Nguyen Quyet Thang, Deputy Managing Director of Tre Viet International Tourism Company (located at 361 Tran Nguyen Dan Street, Tran Hung Dao Ward), reported that the company is currently recruiting approximately 200 tourism workers. The biggest challenge in recruitment is finding experienced workers with long-term expertise and effective strategies to convince clients. Following the merger of Hai Duong province with Hai Phong city, the company hopes to expand its recruitment scope, attracting personnel from the East Hai Phong area – a region with unique coastal tourism products and numerous well-established and specialized tourism training facilities.
Many other companies are also seeking personnel for new business solutions that are about to be launched. Ms. Nguyen Bich Thuy, Deputy Director of MingTravel Trading and Tourism Services Joint Stock Company (Dong Hai Ward), said that the company provides domestic and international tour products. However, after surveying current customer needs, the business is aiming to develop short-day tours within both the East and West Hai Phong areas, catering to the needs of a segment of young people who want to learn about and explore the unique characteristics and products of their hometown.

Closely linked from the training stage.
To promptly supplement the workforce for the tourism industry, several vocational training institutions in the city are adopting flexible and creative approaches. For example, the College of Fisheries and Food Technology has recently opened new majors in beverage mixing, food processing, and hotel and restaurant management. The Hai Duong College of Tourism and Industry focuses on opening short-term courses in beverage mixing techniques, restaurant operations, and food processing techniques to train and retrain workers to keep up with new tourism trends.
According to Ms. Le Thi Trang, Deputy Director of Vietravel Hai Phong Co., Ltd., the company collaborates with Hai Phong University to train human resources for the tourism industry. Students have an environment to practice their profession early on. Through this, they can showcase their qualities and strengths to impress employers and negotiate appropriate compensation commensurate with their abilities. This also brings a "double benefit" because the company gains personnel who meet its aspirations and needs.
Hai Phong Tourism College collaborates with over 30 businesses and organizations operating in the tourism, travel, and accommodation sectors both within and outside the city. According to Ms. Mai Thi Hue, the school's Vice Principal, students typically complete 3-4 months (two internship periods) at these businesses. This provides an opportunity for businesses to gain a better understanding of the college's training programs and the skills of prospective employees.
In addition to collaborating with schools in evaluating training "products," strategic business partners also regularly cooperate with schools in skills competitions to identify, nurture, and develop highly skilled and high-quality workers to serve the future development of the tourism industry.
Furthermore, students studying hotel management are among the nine professions eligible for support under Resolution No. 03/2024/NQ-HĐND, which stipulates the policy on supporting training in certain professions in Hai Phong city from 2024 to 2030. With the synchronized efforts and close coordination of various units, along with the city's specific support mechanisms, important foundations are being laid for the development of human resources in the tourism industry, aiming to make tourism one of the three key economic sectors of the port city in the future.
Recently, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism organized the opening ceremony of a tourism professional training course for officials and staff of accommodation service businesses in the city.
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism Do Thanh Binh, in addition to the staff at accommodation establishments, the Department will strengthen the organization of training courses to improve professional skills, vocational skills, and service etiquette, which are urgent requirements for employees working in the fields of culture and tourism to meet the increasingly high demands of tourists. At the same time, the Department will advise the City People's Committee on mechanisms to attract high-quality human resources to serve the tourism industry, develop new products, and promote the unique values of the heritage region and the distinctive culture of the Eastern region...
