The COVID-19 epidemic is showing signs of increasing again, especially in Southeast Asia, causing concern among Indonesian football officials.

Ahead of the important matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Asia, the head of the Indonesian team - Mr. Sumardji - called on fans not to gather in large numbers at the hotel where the team is stationed to ensure the health and safety of the players.

According to Bola , the "island country" team has been in Jakarta since last night (June 1) to prepare for the upcoming match against China at home stadium Gelora Bung Karno on June 5 in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Asia.

“I have received information that the COVID-19 situation in some neighboring countries is on the rise, which is quite worrying. Therefore, at this hotel, we have to tighten security and safety measures, especially to keep the players healthy. We do not want any incidents to happen,” said Mr. Sumardji.

This concern is further compounded by the recent Thai government reporting of more than 65,000 new COVID-19 cases in just one week. Mr Sumardji stressed that the PSSI (Football Federation of Indonesia) and the hotel management are committed to doing everything possible to protect the health of the players.

Therefore, the 53-year-old team leader earnestly hopes that fans will understand and cooperate: "Because the current health situation may have a negative impact on the team, we once again hope that fans will understand and do not need to rush to the hotel."

Instead of gathering at the hotel, Mr. Sumardji called on fans to support the team by going to Gelora Bung Karno Stadium to cheer directly on match day.
