The launching ceremony, waste classification, garbage exchange, gift giving, introduction of environmentally friendly products... at Luu Huu Phuoc Park (Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City), with the aim of conveying the message of joining hands to protect the environment. At the same time, a series of activities to clean up the environment, collect waste, remove illegal billboards, plant trees on some roads, collect garbage on rivers and canals... were also simultaneously organized. Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Lieu, in Tan An ward, Ninh Kieu district, said: “The launching ceremony in response to World Environment Day at Luu Huu Phuoc Park was very exciting, with many beautiful images such as children exchanging bags of trash for gifts, creating awareness of environmental protection from a young age for the children. Many people, women, youth union members, students cleaning the urban environment, picking up trash on the river... also demonstrated meaningful work. This is work for our living environment, for the health of the community, so everyone needs to raise awareness of environmental protection, not littering, throwing trash indiscriminately...".
World Environment Day 2025 was launched by the United Nations Environment Programme with the theme "Combating Plastic Pollution", calling for drastic action to address plastic waste - one of the most urgent environmental challenges today. This is the second time in 3 years (2023-2025) that this theme has been chosen, demonstrating global priorities in controlling plastic pollution, while reaffirming the commitment to using resources efficiently, protecting biodiversity, enhancing resilience, promoting innovation and strengthening regional and global cooperation towards a circular economy and sustainable development.
The United Nations has chosen the theme of World Oceans Day 2025 as “The Magic of the Ocean: Preserving the Source of Life for Humanity”, with a strong inspirational message, arousing the responsibility to join hands to preserve the ocean, calling for coordination between countries and organizations to act to protect the marine ecosystem for humanity in the context of the ocean facing serious challenges due to climate change and human impacts. Vietnam Sea and Islands Week, taking place from June 1 to 8 every year, is an important occasion to promote and spread love for the homeland's seas and islands, demonstrate the responsibility to preserve the environment and resources of the sea and islands, and strongly affirm the determination to sustainably develop marine economic sectors associated with protecting environmental resources and national sovereignty at sea...
The Children's Day of Environmental Protection with the message "Plastic waste today - Disaster tomorrow" includes a series of entertainment programs, art performances, scholarship and gift giving... for poor but studious students. In particular, the program "Exchange trash for gifts" is the most anticipated. Collect and bring to the event garbage bags (plastic, plastic bottles, old exercise books, scrap paper...) or deposit old books and toys to exchange for gifts at more than 50 booths of units during the festival. 30 students with difficult circumstances also received 30 scholarships, worth 1 million VND/scholarship on the occasion of the festival (June 1).
After this launching ceremony, there are programs for children to exchange trash for gifts; games with prizes about trash classification, games of throwing trash into bins, pushing garbage carts quickly, drawing pictures about the environment, learning knowledge, answering questions about the environment and environmental protection and many other active games... The organizing committee also set up kiosks for organizations, units, and businesses to participate in displaying environmentally friendly products, environmental protection activities, organizing games, and competitions with prizes to learn about the environment and environmental protection. In addition, Can Tho City Youth Union and related agencies and units launched the Green Sunday movement, from June 1 to June 30. The launching locations are on roads, rivers, canals, and streams in the city. The program of releasing fish fry to regenerate aquatic resources was held on June 5 at Ninh Kieu 2 Tourist Wharf, the program of planting over 2,000 trees to protect the environment and the program of "Exchanging pesticide packaging for gifts" was held on June 6 in Phong Dien district...

Mr. Tran Phu Loc Thanh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment (DARD) of Can Tho City, said: “With the attention and direction of the City People's Committee, every year, the Department of Agriculture and Environment presides over the organization of the Launching Ceremony in response to World Environment Day and the Month of Action for the Environment with the goal of raising awareness of environmental protection; at the same time, creating a spread of awareness and voluntary actions for the environment in the community, aiming to launch a movement for the whole population to participate in environmental protection...”.
Responding to the above activities, functional departments, branches, and localities in Can Tho City also simultaneously launched urban environmental sanitation, planted trees on sidewalks and dykes; collected waste on rivers, sidewalks, vacant lots, etc. The City Environment Department closely coordinated with departments, branches, localities, socio-political organizations, and unions to organize activities aimed at environmental protection during the Month of Action for the Environment in 2025 (June 2025).
Mr. Tran Phu Loc Thanh said that the unit will focus on promoting and diversifying forms of communication, information and propaganda activities, raising public awareness about building a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature; rationally using natural resources, biodiversity and responding to climate change through policies towards a greener, cleaner lifestyle; effectively implementing the Projects "Promoting propaganda on plastic waste prevention and control in the period of 2021-2025", the Project "Strengthening plastic waste management in Vietnam" of the Prime Minister and mechanisms, policies and laws on environmental protection. Actively promote the movement against plastic waste, collect and classify waste at source; build and replicate effective models in organizing the collection, classification and treatment of household waste at source; Promote sustainable, environmentally friendly consumption, use environmentally friendly products, replace single-use plastic products and hard-to-decompose plastic bags. Organize activities with direct community participation such as environmental sanitation campaigns, waste collection and treatment; plant trees in urban and residential areas; strengthen state management of environmental protection, strictly control sources of pollution...
