Meanwhile, Emmanuel Coquand, a spokesman for the Haute-Savoie local government, said those caught up in the incident were skiing in the mountains, adding that they were still confirming the identities of the victims.
He said the avalanche was very large, measuring 1 km by 500 meters and at an altitude of 3,500 meters, and its cause was under investigation.
The glacier is located near the village and famous ski resort of Les Contamines-Montjoie.
President Emmanuel Macron wrote on Twitter that rescuers were continuing to search for more casualties and his thoughts were with the victims and their families.
