Being a very familiar insect, often appearing during the rice harvest season, anyone who has ever lived in the countryside must have seen and tasted the mole at least once. Thinking that this animal is just a rustic, rural dish, not worth much, few people expect that, currently, the mole is being sold for up to 800 thousand VND/kg.
Muong muong is sold for 750-800 thousand VND/kg.
Specializing in selling regional specialties online, Ms. Ho Thi Phuong Quy, residing in Me Tri (Nam Tu Liem, Hanoi ) said that about a week ago, a supplier in Thanh Hoa reported having muom muom, so she immediately posted an ad for sale, unexpectedly her post attracted nearly 500 comments and orders.
“This season, grasshoppers and water bugs have started to appear. Grasshoppers are only 250,000 VND/kg, but I sell rice water bugs for 780,000 VND/kg. The price is high, but there are many buyers during the season. It takes several days to collect a few kilos to return the goods,” said Ms. Quy.
According to Ms. Quy, the reason why rice worm is so expensive is because it is very rare, cannot be farmed and is difficult to catch. Each person can only catch a few ounces at most, so it has to be collected from many people and over many days. Last week, she collected 5kg but when she got there, it was not enough to share with customers.

The price is high but it is rare so the spoon fish is bought as soon as it arrives.
Wandering around the apartment market where he lives, Mr. Hieu, residing in Hoang Mai (Hanoi), suddenly saw familiar water bugs being sold by someone.
“My parents are both farmers . When we were young, my sisters and I often followed our parents to the fields to harvest rice. The best part was when the harvest was almost over, we caught the water mites and brought them home. If there were a lot, we would roast them in lemon leaves, if there were a little, we would grill them on charcoal, they were both fragrant and rich,” Hieu recalls.
According to Mr. Hieu, it has been a long time since he has been able to harvest like before. The fields in his hometown have also been replaced by harvesters and threshers. The fields use many types of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, so the number of muong muong has also decreased.
Seeing someone selling it, Mr. Hieu asked the price and was surprised when a kilo of muom muom cost up to 800 thousand VND/kg.
“The sale post had no price, and the dish looked familiar so everyone rushed to ask to buy it, only to find out that the price for 1kg of muom muom was 800,000 VND. It was too expensive so I only dared to buy 200 grams to eat."

The best way to eat water spinach is to fry it with lemongrass and lime leaves.
According to Mr. Hieu, the best water mimosa is one that has its wings plucked, its intestines removed, it is washed and then fried with lemongrass and lime leaves. The water mimosas are golden, crispy and fragrant.
“When we were young, besides going to school, we had to help our parents with their work in the fields. The most memorable time was after the harvest, when we went to let the cows graze freely with our friends. We let the cows graze freely, then we went to catch grasshoppers and locusts, then made a pile of dry straw and grilled the mole crickets to eat. The mole crickets were both fragrant and fatty, and after eating them, everyone’s mouth was covered in charcoal,” Hieu said.
After a while, unexpectedly, the free food of the country kids back then has now become a specialty, and if you want to eat it, you have to pay a lot of money.
