The image of the Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni) above was captured by a camera trap installed by rangers at Bang Lang National Park as part of a long-term wildlife monitoring program.

Mr. Chalerm Phoommai, director of the Wildlife Conservation Office, said this was the second time a Malayan tiger had been recorded in this area, after the first time in 2023. The first Malayan tiger seen two years ago was nicknamed "Bang Lang 01".

The Malayan tiger is a subspecies found only in the southern forests of Thailand and on the Malaysian peninsula.

They are distinct from the more commonly known Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti), which inhabits the central and western forest regions of Thailand such as the Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex, Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary and Khao Yai National Park.

The discovery highlights the ecological richness of Bang Lang National Park and Hala Bala Wildlife Sanctuary in Yala, which are important habitat corridors connecting protected forests across the Thai-Malaysian border, Mr Chalerm said.

The discovery of the rare tiger was the result of the ongoing Smart Patrol project, which combines ranger patrols with quality data collection to monitor threats and support ecosystem protection.

In addition to capturing images of the Malayan tiger, the rangers' camera traps also captured images of a number of other rare animals such as elephants, gaurs and tapirs.

Wildlife Conservation Office and Forest Conservation Office No. 6 (Pattani Branch) officials continue to monitor the Malayan tiger population and use the data to shape long-term conservation strategies, in collaboration with national and regional partners.
