Bang Phuc Leaf Yeast Wine - A long-standing specialty wine

In the land of Bac Kan , where the hills are green and the forests are vast, there is a special product that is developing strongly, which is Bang Phuc fermented rice wine. Not just a drink, Bang Phuc fermented rice wine is also a symbol of solidarity, creativity and continuous efforts of the Tay ethnic community in Bang Phuc commune, Cho Don district. Recognized as a 4-star OCOP product, Bang Phuc fermented rice wine is increasingly affirming its position in the market and bringing many economic and cultural values to the people here.

Ms. Nong Thi Tam, Director of Thanh Tam Fermented Wine Cooperative, recalls the early days when fermented wine was only brewed by hand in households. "When I first started, I could only brew 5 to 10 liters of wine per day, then gradually increased to 15 and then 20 liters. Establishing the cooperative not only helped us build a brand but also created jobs for the women in the village," Ms. Tam shared.

Previously, yeast wine was often sold in communes and districts in plastic cans or glass bottles of unknown origin. However, since joining cooperatives and the OCOP program, the Tay people in Bang Phuc have united to develop a brand for this traditional product. Through the OCOP program, Bang Phuc yeast wine not only has beautiful packaging and designs but is also clearly recognized and known in many provinces and cities.

The unique feature of Bang Phuc yeast wine is its mild, aromatic traditional wine. As the name suggests, the wine is handcrafted from yeast containing 19 to 32 medicinal leaves picked from natural forests. This delicate combination not only creates a special flavor but also brings health benefits to users.

Yeast wine is brewed entirely using traditional manual methods, achieving 4-star OCOP certification in December 2022.

Ms. Luc Thi Thom, a member of Thanh Tam Yeast Wine Cooperative, shared: "Since joining the cooperative, we have been trained and improved our products. Thanks to that, the quality of the products when released to the market is always stable."

In 2017, Ms. Nong Thi Tam gathered small-scale wine producers together and established the Thanh Tam Fermented Wine Cooperative. At that time, the cooperative had only 7 members, but after more than 5 years of establishment, the number of members has increased to 11. On average, the cooperative sells 10,000 liters of fermented wine to the market each month, with wholesale prices ranging from 25,000 to 30,000 VND per liter and about 80,000 VND per liter when bottled.

After deducting all expenses, the cooperative earns about 1 billion VND each year from making yeast wine. The model of Thanh Tam Yeast Wine Cooperative not only brings high economic efficiency but also creates jobs, contributing to improving the material and spiritual life of women in the cooperative. Thereby, contributing to the socio -economic development of the locality.

Bang Phuc Leaf Yeast Wine: 4-star OCOP product conquers the "difficult" market

Ms. Do Thi Minh Hoa, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Bac Kan province, said: "On a household scale, it is very difficult to have consistent product quality. However, if organized in the form of a cooperative like Thanh Tam, members can exchange experiences, ensuring consistent quality and the highest production efficiency."

To continue supporting the sustainable development of yeast wine cooperatives, the local authorities of Cho Don district and Bac Kan province have had many support policies from technical training to production orientation, connecting and expanding product consumption markets both domestically and internationally.

According to many diners, the cooperative’s wine is delicious, smooth and has a unique flavor. Currently, the wine is exported to many provinces and cities across the country. Even the yeast wine is exported to the Japanese market – a market that requires strict quality of products, so the fact that the people of the mountainous region can meet the requirements of this market is a great success.

Mr. Trieu Huy Chung, Chairman of Cho Don District People's Committee, emphasized: "We always pay attention to packaging, labeling, bottling and product quality. Wine quality indicators must be tested and meet strict standards before being able to export to demanding markets like Japan."

The fact that the cooperatives in the highlands of ethnic minorities in Bac Kan can export their products has affirmed the right direction in developing OCOP products. This not only opens up a new direction for sustainable economic development but also contributes to preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of the locality.

Bang Phuc fermented wine is not only a typical product of Bac Kan but also a testament to the continuous efforts and creativity of the Tay ethnic community. With guaranteed quality, increasingly affirmed and developed brand, Bang Phuc fermented wine will certainly continue to expand, bringing pride to the people here.
