Figures from the General Statistics Office released this morning show that in April Vietnam is estimated to have welcomed 1.65 million international visitors, an increase of more than 6% over the same period last year but the lowest since the beginning of the year.
In particular, transportation activities in April were bustling, meeting the travel needs of domestic people as well as international visitors with more than 486 million passengers transported (an increase of nearly 6% compared to the previous month).
In the first four months of the year, international arrivals reached nearly 7.67 million (up 23% over the same period last year). At this rate, experts predict that the entire industry can reach 22-23 million international arrivals by the end of the year.
Passengers entering by air still accounted for the majority, with nearly 6.6 million arrivals, followed by road with nearly 925,000 arrivals and by sea with nearly 160,000 arrivals. Passenger transport is estimated to have reached 1,880 million passengers transported (up 19% over the same period last year) after 4 months.
Notably, China remained the largest source of visitors to Vietnam in April and the past four months. South Korea ranked second, followed by other familiar faces such as Taiwan, Japan, India, and Cambodia, with the number of visitors from these four countries reaching more than 4.2 million (accounting for nearly 60% of the total number of visitors).
The Russian market grew well (110.9%), making this country the largest tourist market in Europe with more than 166,000 visitors to Vietnam in the first four months of the year, higher than the UK (155,000), France (137,000), and Germany (125,000).
Besides, Philippines, Cambodia, China, Laos, Poland are also the highest growing tourist groups in the first 4 months of the year, from 150 to more than 200%.
Experts say that April is the end of the peak season for inbound tourists (international arrivals), so the decline compared to other months is normal and predictable. The next three months are the summer vacations for students and will be the peak months for domestic tourism and are expected to bring a "golden season" for domestic tourism.
Currently, the tourism industry is focusing on implementing promotional campaigns abroad. The National Tourism Administration is organizing a program to launch a market to introduce Vietnamese tourism in France, Italy, and Switzerland from May 3-14. This year, the Administration is expected to organize 7 large-scale programs to introduce Vietnamese tourism abroad, with the participation of many localities and businesses to promote the image and brand, and attract international visitors to Vietnam.
