On March 3, Apple CEO Tim Cook posted on social network X, revealing that the company will launch a new product this week, most likely the MacBook Air M4.

Design

Apple will continue to offer the MacBook Air in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes. There are no rumors of design changes, so the M4 MacBook Air models will likely look identical to the current versions.

The last time Apple refreshed the MacBook Air's design was in 2022, so keeping the design the same for three years makes sense.

Screen

Apple is using mini-LED display technology for the MacBook Pro, but this may still be a premium privilege. Therefore, the new MacBook Air will most likely still use Liquid Retina Display (LED) technology like the current models.

With the recent ‌MacBook Pro‌ refresh, Apple added an anti-glare nano-texture display upgrade option to the MacBook Pro. While it’s possible that this feature could also come to the MacBook Air, there’s no guarantee that it could remain an option for the higher-end lineup.

M4 Chip

The M4 chip has appeared in many products such as MacBook Pro, iMac, iPad Pro, and Mac mini, so its presence on MacBook Air is not a surprise.

The M4 chip has up to 10 CPU cores, 10 GPU cores, along with a 16-core Neural Engine. It is built on TSMC's improved 3nm process and is designed to support Apple Intelligence.

The M4's performance will be better than the M3, but not by a huge leap. The CPU and GPU are expected to see a performance improvement of around 25%.

RAM

The current MacBook Air starts with 16GB of RAM, up from 8GB — a change Apple made last year. The new MacBook Air models are expected to retain the standard 16GB RAM.

Battery life

Thanks to the M4 chip's power-saving capabilities, the MacBook Air can improve battery life. For example, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 chip can last up to 24 hours of video playback and 16 hours of web browsing.

FaceTime Camera

The MacBook Pro recently got a 12MP front-facing camera upgrade, and it's likely the MacBook Air will get a similar update. The camera supports Center Stage, which keeps your subject in the center of the frame even when moving.

Additionally, it can support Desk View, which provides a top-down view of your desk, useful for presentations or demos.

Thunderbolt port

Currently, the MacBook Air has two Thunderbolt 3 ports, but new models can be upgraded to three Thunderbolt 4 ports, upgrading both speed and connectivity.

The new MacBook Pro models can support two external displays when the lid is open, and it's likely the MacBook Air will have similar specs.

Selling price

The MacBook Air M3 currently starts at $1,099, with no word on pricing changes for the M4 version.

Stop selling MacBook Air M2?

Apple still sells the MacBook Air with the M2 chip for $999. It’s possible that Apple will discontinue the M2 model and replace it with the MacBook Air M3, but it’s also possible that Apple will keep the M2 model if upgrading to the M3 chip increases the price too much.

Other "Air" products?

The MacBook Air M4 is almost certain to be announced, but Apple could surprise with other products. There are a number of Apple products with “Air” in their names, some of which are due for updates.

For example, the iPad Air is expected to get an update this spring, and AirTag will also get a new version in 2025.

Apple is unlikely to hold a spring event this year. Previously, the iPhone 16e was announced via a press release with a video. It is possible that Apple will use a similar approach for the new MacBook Air. The device could be announced as early as tomorrow.

Previously, Apple CEO Tim Cook posted on social network X, the post was accompanied by a short video with the caption “There's something in the Air”. Many speculated that the word “Air” refers to MacBook Air – the slogan Apple used when introducing this product line in 2008.
