China, the US, South Korea, Japan… are the leading markets for importing Vietnamese fruits and vegetables. These are also fertile lands with much room for fruit and vegetable exports to accelerate in the last months of the year.
Growth traction
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vina Fruit), said: Recently, member enterprises of Vina Fruit have increased Applying high technology in production, complying with regulations on traceability, growing area codes, packaging codes, meeting food safety standards of import markets, vegetable and fruit products are exported to many countries. In particular, durian is the main export item and has a strong increase in value in the third quarter of 2025, reaching 1.94 billion USD, up 30.3% over the same period last year.
In the first 9 months of 2025, although the export value of Vietnam's durian decreased by 1.7% compared to the same period, it still reached 2.76 billion USD. Other items such as dragon fruit, banana, mango, jackfruit, coconut... all had strong export values. Notably, the export value of lychee in the third quarter of 2025 increased sharply compared to the same period last year, bringing exports in the first 9 months of this year to 73 million USD, an increase of 312.1% over the same period.
A highlight of fruit and vegetable exports in the third quarter of 2025 is that the export value of processed fruit and vegetable products accounts for 16.6% of the total export value of fruit and vegetable products, reaching 507 million USD, an increase of 47.4% compared to the third quarter of 2024. Processed products are exported mostly to the markets of China, the US, South Korea, the Netherlands, and Japan.
It is forecasted that from now until the end of the year, key products such as durian, dragon fruit, grapefruit, etc. will have a high growth rate to serve the needs of festivals and Tet in many countries. Currently, businesses are preparing quality goods and proactively using forms of transportation to access the market most conveniently.
Regarding the staple durian, according to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), Vietnam currently has 24 testing laboratories recognized by the General Administration of Customs of China with a total theoretical capacity of about 3,200 samples/day, enough to meet actual demand. Regarding customs clearance, at the main border gates, durian export activities to China are still going smoothly.
In the last months of the year, Vietnamese grapefruit also received good news when it became the 6th fruit of Vietnam to successfully open to the Australian market; previously, dragon fruit, lychee, longan, mango and passion fruit were allowed to be exported to this market. Technical Director of Vina T&T Group Nguyen Phong Phu shared: Currently, partners in Australia are very interested in Vietnamese grapefruit and continuously receive orders. The opportunity for this fruit to grow in Australia is very high because it does not face great competition from similar products from other countries.
Furthermore, Vietnamese grapefruit is also applying standard cultivation processes, preventing harmful organisms and implementing traceability..., fully meeting the technical requirements of many markets in the world . This is also an item in the top 10 types. fruit exports has the highest value in Vietnam today.
Focus on large market groups
To soon reach the 8 billion USD mark, in the last months of the year, businesses need to focus on promoting fruit and vegetable exports to large markets such as China, the US, Japan, Germany, etc. According to the Chinese Customs, the import value of fruit and vegetable products into the Chinese market in the first 9 months of this year reached 20.3 billion USD, an increase of 5.8% over the same period in 2024. Of which, the import value of fruit and vegetable products from Vietnam accounted for 20% of total imports, an increase compared to 17.9% in the same period last year.
Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association Dang Phuc Nguyen said that with the advantage of close geographical location and fast delivery time, Vietnamese fruits and vegetables are highly competitive in terms of freshness and quality compared to many other countries in the Chinese market. However, to expand market share, Vietnamese enterprises need to strictly meet Chinese standards on quarantine, traceability and packaging; at the same time, quickly update adjustments and changes in regulations and standards for exporting agricultural products to this market.
According to Mr. Ngo Xuan Nam, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Inquiry Point and Notification Office on Epidemiology and Animal and Plant Quarantine, China recently announced the issuance of Order 280 replacing Order 248 regulating the management of registration of foreign food production enterprises imported into China, effective from June 1, 2026. Therefore, businesses need to review documents, prepare data and adjust registration and export procedures to meet new requirements.
The US is a potential market with many growth opportunities for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables. A major challenge is the high logistics costs that make many products, especially fresh fruits, unable to compete with other countries such as Mexico, Canada, Chile and Peru. Therefore, the strategy to increase turnover in the US is to focus on deeply processed fruits and vegetables that have a long shelf life and are easy to transport; at the same time, it is also suitable for the taste of American consumers who are switching to convenient products but still ensuring quality and nutrition.
