Al Jazeera reported that on February 26, local officials said the death toll from a Sudanese military plane crash in Omdurman city, a suburb of the capital Khartoum, has risen to at least 46 people.
On the evening of February 25 (local time), an Antonov crashed while taking off from Wadi Seidna military airport.
The crash also injured 10 others, the Khartoum Media Office said. Initial reports from Sudan's Ministry of Health put the death toll at 19 and said the plane crashed into a house in the Karrari district of Omdurman.
The Ministry of Health said that among the injured were children and all were taken by emergency teams to a nearby hospital for care and treatment.
Major General Bahr Ahmed, a senior commander in Khartoum, is said to be among those killed.
The Sudanese military also issued a statement, confirming that casualties in the collision included soldiers. The statement did not specify the cause of the incident, but military sources seen by Reuters said it was likely due to a technical fault.
Residents in northern Omdurman said they heard a loud bang from the plane crash, which damaged several houses and left power outages in some nearby areas.
