The United Nations calls for $6 billion in relief contributions for Sudan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Human Rights (OCHA) has called for $6 billion in donations to support its humanitarian program in Sudan, aiming to save tens of millions of lives in the African country.

In the statement, OCHA stressed that Sudan is facing an alarming humanitarian emergency, with famine raging, widespread sexual violence, and children being massacred.

The statement also added that without immediate funding, two-thirds of children will not have access to primary education , 4.8 million people in local communities will face severe food insecurity and 1.8 million people will not receive food assistance.

Since 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war, following a power struggle between army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

The conflict has forced more than 11 million Sudanese to flee their homes, in what the UN calls one of the world's largest displacement crises.
