A small plane carrying two people crashed near a shopping mall in Philadelphia, causing multiple casualties on the ground, local media reported.

The Philadelphia Inquirer , citing police, said the accident happened shortly after 6 p.m. Eastern time near Roosevelt Mall in Northeast Philadelphia.

According to the newspaper, at least one house and several cars were on fire.

The Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management confirmed on social media that a “major incident” had occurred in the reported area, but did not provide any other details.

CBS Philadelphia's affiliate posted images of a large fire and multiple fire trucks at the scene of the crash, saying the victims' conditions were not immediately known.
