"Korean customers love to eat beef noodle soup"

Once a famous food blogger on the internet with video clips speaking fluent Vietnamese, Park Woo-sung (27 years old, Korean nationality) left an impression with his handsome appearance, humorous and optimistic way of speaking. Suddenly opening a restaurant specializing in Vietnamese dishes called "An An" in Seoul, he received many positive responses from many Korean diners and Vietnamese people studying and working here.

Park Woo-sung's Vietnamese restaurant in Korea receives support from many Korean and Vietnamese customers.

Under the soft yellow light, the YouTuber arranged 10 tables and chairs in neat rows, with a few paintings of Hoi An ancient town, terraced fields, etc. hanging on the wall, along with the words "Travel to Vietnam" at the cashier counter. He said that because he was so passionate about Vietnamese cuisine , when he returned to Korea, he cherished opening a Vietnamese restaurant, both to promote Vietnamese dishes to Korean people and to be able to eat dishes from his "second homeland" when he was hungry.

Park Woo-sung's Vietnamese restaurant in Seoul

Creating hundreds of culinary videos on his old YouTube channel, the Korean guy spent his days wandering around the countryside, alleys, and shops across Vietnam. "I feel like I'm about to become a Central Vietnamese because every dish from the Central region is here. Every dish is delicious, cheap, and has a unique flavor," he said in a culinary experience video clip at Ba Hoa market (Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City). His introduction was very popular with netizens.

Park Woo-sung originally planned to open a Vietnamese vegetarian restaurant, but because vegetarian dishes were not popular here, he opened a restaurant selling pho, grilled pork vermicelli, sandwiches, fried rice, rib rice... and will add vegetarian dishes to the menu. "Because when I was in Vietnam, every time I went to my Vietnamese friends' house, everyone would cook and then tell me to "eat, eat, eat". "An An" is an abbreviation of "Eat! Eat"! I found it very friendly, like family, so I used that as the name of the restaurant," the YouTuber explained.

Koreans eat the most

With a menu divided into dry dishes, soups, sandwiches, side dishes... the Vietnamese restaurant is always bustling with office workers coming for lunch; in the evening, it is mainly residents of apartment buildings. According to observations, the restaurant owner said that currently Korean customers account for 99%, the rest are Vietnamese customers who come to the restaurant because they see it while passing by or watch it on TikTok. "My favorite dish is grilled pork vermicelli because of the rich vegetables. At the restaurant, Korean customers really like beef pho. Although it has only been open for a month, the restaurant already has quite a few regular customers. There are women who come to eat pho 4 days in a row, or there are men who come to the restaurant to eat bun cha every 2-3 days, and there are women who bring their whole family and colleagues," Park Woo-sung shared.

In Korea, when eating out, the side dish is usually kimchi, not many fresh vegetables. Therefore, many Koreans after trying Vietnamese food are delighted because there are many vegetables, fruits, and nutritious ingredients. Vietnamese ingredients are not popular in Korea, so he had a lot of difficulty finding sources. The 9X guy said: "The main ingredients, my Vietnamese friend and I bought at Asian markets, supermarkets or even hand-carried goods at high prices. Then we both stood in the kitchen, researching how to cook so that it still felt like we ate in Vietnam, but had to add and reduce the aromatic vegetables to suit Korean tastes."

After a period of making content about Vietnamese cuisine, now standing in the kitchen cooking Vietnamese dishes, Park Woo-sung smiled and admitted that Vietnamese dishes are very elaborate, mostly from raw ingredients rather than using ready-made sauces. It is difficult, but every time he sees customers finish their bowls, leaving nothing behind, all the fatigue of the YouTuber disappears. Many customers who come to eat, knowing that he has lived in Vietnam for nearly 15 years, take the opportunity to ask more about Vietnam, about cuisine, tourist destinations as well as simple greetings in Vietnamese.
