The vast green of Nho Que

In the chilly weather at the end of the year, when buckwheat flowers and wild sunflowers bloom on the winding mountain roads in Meo Vac commune (Tuyen Quang), Nho Que river appears like a jade green silk strip winding between the abyss, making the rocky plateau landscape even more attractive and unforgettable in the eyes of tourists.

Buckwheat flowers, a typical highlight of tourism in Tuyen Quang (formerly Ha Giang ), usually bloom from late October to early December. November is considered the peak season for flower viewing with a large number of visitors, especially on weekends.

Besides many car tours , exploring the rocky plateau by motorbike is an experience loved by young and international tourists.

November is dry and cool with successive flower seasons and many unique festivals inviting tourists to Tuyen Quang .

Nho Que River originates from the Yunnan mountains (China), the section flowing through Vietnam is nearly 50km long, passing through special terrain and creating spectacular landscapes.

Looking down from Ma Pi Leng Pass, the deep green Nho Que River looks like a color painted by water and light. Between the green of the river, the deep gray of the rocks, the clear yellow of the sun and the gently drifting white clouds, the landscape becomes so harmonious that just by raising the camera, one can capture a frame that makes the viewer want to go there to feel it for themselves.

On both sunny and cloudy days, visitors can easily see rainbows on the river.

From National Highway 4C, turn down to Pa Vi intersection, a road of about 10km will lead to the parking lot of the tourism exploitation unit on Nho Que 1 Hydropower Lake. Here, visitors receive service consultation before buying tickets to get on the boat to explore the lake (120,000 VND/adult, 60,000 VND/child).

As the boat leaves the dock, the calm waters open up a journey of anticipation. Even on cloudy days, the magical green color of Nho Que does not fade.

Wild and poetic nature along the Nho Que River.

A boat trip on the river usually lasts from 1 to 1.5 hours, the boatman will actively stop at the most beautiful photo spots. Tourists can also rent traditional costumes, buy food and drinks at the shops right at the pier.

After about 20 minutes of traveling, Tu San Gorge, known as the deepest canyon in Southeast Asia, appears majestically between two vertical cliffs. The towering rock slabs look like giant gates created by nature over millions of years.

This is also one of the reasons why Tu San Alley was chosen as the center of the symbolic image (logo) of Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark. In 2009, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism ranked this area as a Vietnam Scenic Monument, and recognized Nho Que as one of the most unique geological tectonic valleys in the country.

According to geological documents, Tu San gorge on Nho Que river has a cliff height of up to nearly 900m, 1.7km long and nearly 1km deep.

Tourists take beautiful, memorable photos in front of Tu San canyon.

The Nho Que experience is not only about boat trips. For those who like to be active, kayaking, SUP (stand-up paddleboarding), fishing or camping on the shore are all interesting activities.

Many young and Western tourists choose to spend a whole day immersing themselves in the fresh air of the river and mountains, ordering food from service businesses on both sides of the river or staying overnight in nearby homestays, waiting for the sunrise on the high mountains.

A group of young people enjoyed the experience of wearing traditional costumes while walking around Nho Que.

For those who have more time and like to learn about culture, they can walk through corn fields, along buckwheat hills to enter Ta Lang and Hau Chua villages... to admire the strong vitality that constantly grows from the tiny houses clinging to the mountain rocks.

Nho Que River has value for irrigation, fisheries and tourism.

The milestone marking a major change in Nho Que tourism began in 2019, when Tu San Agricultural Services and Tourism Cooperative coordinated with Nho Que 1 Hydropower One Member Limited Liability Company to operate a passenger boat route on the lake. About 50 boats are operated, serving an average of 500-1,000 passengers/day; during peak holidays and Tet, the number can reach 6,000 passengers - a number that shows the increasingly strong appeal of this unique tourist route.

The increasing number of tourist groups coming to Tuyen Quang and Nho Que also means more opportunities to create livelihoods and improve the lives of many ethnic communities of H'Mong, Dao, Giay... who have long lived in the area.

Visitors can come to Nho Que at any time of the year because the river and its banks are beautiful in all four seasons with their own nuances.

In spring, the clear blue water is dotted with pink peach blossoms, white plum blossoms, and red kapok flowers. In summer, take a river cruise to cool off and enjoy water sports.

The weather turns to autumn, the forest changes leaves, making the space immersed in a romantic atmosphere. Even in the cold winter, the Buckwheat Flower Festival still brings a warm, bustling atmosphere.

All the fatigue from the long journey and rough terrain seems to disappear when standing in the middle of the beautiful nature here.

This year, the 2025 Buckwheat Flower Festival will take place from November 29 to the end of December with many cultural and artistic activities in Quan Ba, Lung Cam, Nha Vuong, Lo Lo Chai... and Nho Que boat station area. The event is expected to promote tourism thanks to the combination of natural beauty and cultural and historical values of the rocky plateau.

Amidst the cold gray rocky land, the Nho Que stream with its rare green color has become a strong yet gentle highlight of the northern highlands. And perhaps, it is this immense yet intimate beauty that makes anyone who has been there want to return again.
