Mesut Ozil announces retirement

On his personal page, Mesut Ozil wrote: "After careful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from professional football . I have had the privilege of being a professional footballer for almost 17 years now and I am extremely grateful for this opportunity.

But in recent weeks and months, with a number of injuries, it became increasingly clear that the time had come to leave football on the big stage.

I want to thank Schalke, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Fenerbahce and Basaksehir, all my friends in football. It has been a great journey," the German midfielder added.

In February 2023, Turkish newspaper Fanatik confirmed that the former Arsenal star informed his teammates after Istanbul Basaksehir's 0-1 defeat to Kayserispor about his decision to quit football. After a month of silence, Ozil officially confirmed.

Mesut Ozil grew up in the Schalke 04 training academy and quickly showed his talent. In 2008, this midfielder moved to Werder Bremen for 4.3 million euros.

Ozil's career began to flourish and he was recruited by Real Madrid in the summer of 2010 for 15 million euros. The German star has won enough titles such as La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup.
