On August 14, the government of the Mexican state of Veracruz said police found the bodies of at least 13 people hidden in freezers in several buildings in the state.

On-site examination and forensic work are underway to identify the victims and those involved. Authorities have also detained six suspects for questioning.

Veracruz is an oil-rich state located along the Gulf of Mexico coast. The area has long been a hotbed for human and drug trafficking, as well as other criminal activity.

Mexican government figures show more than 400 people have died in Veracruz in the first half of this year.
