Strengthening the handling of fishing vessels violating IUU in the Southern sea

Since the end of October, the peak time of patrolling, inspecting and controlling illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, authorities have handled 25 fishing vessels violating IUU in the Southwest sea.

Authorities increase patrols, inspections, controls and handling of IUU violations in the Southwest Sea

Specifically, from November 10 to November 13, during the peak period, Border Guard Squadron 18 (Border Guard) presided over and coordinated with the Coast Guard Region 3 Command (Vietnam Coast Guard Command) to detect and handle 3 fishing vessels with signs of violating regulations on fisheries and IUU.

At 10:00 a.m. on November 11, 2025, in the waters of Can Tho City, the patrol and control team of Border Guard Squadron 18 and the Coast Guard Region 3 Command inspected a fishing vessel with registration number ST 06666 TS (captained by Mr. Nguyen Tai L., born in 1975, residing in An Giang province, and 4 crew members).

At the time of inspection, the authorities discovered violations such as: Not having enough safety staff on fishing vessels; crew members not having their names in the crew register; not carrying fishing licenses.

Continuing patrolling and controlling, at 12 o'clock the same day, also in this sea area, the authorities continued to discover fishing boat number: BT 94545 TS (captained by Mr. Phan Van D., born in 1979, residing in Dong Thap province) and fishing boat number BT 99713 TS (captained by Mr. Nguyen Van D., born in 1983, residing in Vinh Long province and 8 crew members).

At the time of inspection, the authorities discovered the following violations: Not having enough safety staff for fishing vessels; crew members not being listed in the crew register; not purchasing fishing vessel insurance as prescribed; not carrying a fishing vessel technical safety certificate.

Authorities propagate IUU prevention to fishermen

In less than half a month since the end of October - the peak month of operations - the authorities have handled 25 fishing vessels violating IUU regulations in the Southwest sea. The authorities of Border Guard Squadron 18 and Coast Guard Region 3 Command have continuously detected and handled 25 fishing vessels violating regulations on fisheries and IUU.

Along with patrolling, controlling and handling violations, the authorities also focused on propaganda work on IUU prevention for 121 fishing vessels and 1,056 crew members, distributed more than 1,500 leaflets and presented 152 national flags to fishermen operating in the Southwest sea.
