Open 2 spillways of Thac Ba hydropower plant to prevent and control floods

Opening the two spillways of Thac Ba Hydropower Plant aims to maintain the upstream water level not exceeding 56.0m to ensure dam safety and flood prevention.

According to information from the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Control and Search and Rescue (PCTT&TKCN) of Lao Cai province, on the afternoon of July 28, Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company sent a document to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ; People's Committees of Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang and Phu Tho provinces about opening the spillway of Thac Ba Hydropower Plant to prevent floods.

At 2:00 p.m. on July 28, the water level at Thac Ba hydroelectric reservoir reached 56.1m; while the water flow into the lake reached about ^435m3 /s.

Accordingly, at 7:00 a.m. on July 28, the upstream water level of Thac Ba Lake was at 56.21m, the downstream water level was 24.12m, the flow to the lake was ^490m3 /s, and the total flow to the downstream was ^413m3 /s.

Implementing the Inter-reservoir Operation Procedure on the Red River Basin, the Minister of Agriculture and Environment ordered the Director of Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company to open 2 spillway gates at 4:00 p.m. on July 28 to urgently bring the upstream water level to 56.0m; then adjust the opening to maintain the upstream water level not exceeding 56.0m.

When Thac Ba Hydropower Plant opens two floodgates, the total water flow downstream will reach ^580m3 /s. Therefore, the water level downstream will increase from 1m to 2m compared to before flood discharge.

To ensure safety for works and riverside activities, Thac Ba Hydropower Joint Stock Company requests the People's Committees of the provinces and cities of Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Phu Tho and Hanoi to notify authorities at all levels, people, organizations operating on rivers and riverside; aquaculture facilities, water transport vehicles; ferry terminals; review and ensure safety of works under construction; activities of sand and gravel exploitation, gathering and transit to know information about the flood discharge of Thac Ba Hydropower Reservoir to proactively take preventive measures to ensure safety of people and property.
