After researching, it was found that giant freshwater prawns have a very high nutritional value and are more popular in the market than other freshwater aquatic products. Mr. Phan Van Phung's family in Dao Trung village, Trieu Trung commune, Trieu Phong district decided to change production and invest in commercial giant freshwater prawn farming in earthen ponds. Thanks to raising prawns according to the correct technical process, his model has developed well, bringing in a significant income for his family.

Previously, Mr. Phung's family used nearly 2,000 m2 of pond to raise traditional fish such as grass carp, common carp, tilapia, snakehead fish, catfish, etc., but the economic efficiency was not high and there were many risks. After a period of researching new species, he decided to choose giant freshwater prawns to raise. An advantage is that in 2022, his family was selected by the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to support the construction of a giant freshwater prawn farming model. Starting to work, he immediately implemented the treatment and cleaning of the pond, at the same time reinforced the fence system, pond nets, drilled water wells, installed pumps and equipment for shrimp farming in accordance with the technical instructions for giant freshwater prawn farming. He bought the giant freshwater prawn breed from Ben Tre province and was of good quality. Giant freshwater prawns have high nutritional value, rich in protein, calcium, vitamins and minerals. Shrimp meat is used to prepare many attractive dishes that are also beneficial to health for all ages. Therefore, when it comes to harvest, traders come to his family's pond to buy. From the results of the first year, in 2023, Mr. Phung will continue to raise freshwater giant freshwater shrimp.
According to Mr. Phung, to effectively raise giant freshwater prawns, shrimp breeds must be healthy, agile, disease-free, light pink, and of the same size to raise new shrimp to grow well and cause little harm to their species. Caring for giant freshwater prawns is quite simple, just need to monitor the quantity and promptly detect diseases for effective prevention. Shrimp have the ability to grow quickly, the investment capital is not large, the water source in the pond does not affect the surrounding environment. The care time is short, it is possible to take advantage of locally available food sources such as small fish, snails, rice bran, corn mixed for shrimp to eat... Shrimp farming density is from 10 - 12 shrimp/m2. From 6 - 7 months old, shrimp can grow from 150 - 160 times compared to the initial weight of shrimp breeds. Thanks to the correct application of technical processes, Mr. Phung's giant freshwater prawns grow well. During the 6 - 7 months of farming, he proceeds to harvest. On average, 1 kg has 10 - 12 shrimp, the selling price is 350 thousand VND/kg, the profit is about 140 million VND/crop. Mr. Phung added: "This is the second year we have implemented the green-legged shrimp farming model. During the farming process, I found that green-legged shrimp adapt to the freshwater environment and local climate. In the coming time, my family will continue to maintain and develop this model."
The successful construction of the freshwater giant freshwater prawn farming model of Mr. Phung's family has opened a new direction in freshwater aquaculture in Trieu Phong district and found new breeding subjects, bringing high economic efficiency, suitable for local environmental and climatic conditions. Thereby, helping people exploit their potential and strengths to develop a model that brings in a good source of income and solves employment in rural areas.
Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Trieu Phong district Nguyen Thien Nhan said: “Trieu Phong district has a freshwater aquaculture area of 305 hectares, which is a favorable condition for expanding the area of giant freshwater prawn farming. In the 2 years of 2022 - 2023, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will advise the District People's Committee to support breeds and techniques to deploy the construction of 2 giant freshwater prawn farming models, including the household of Mr. Phan Van Phung. This is a new type of farming in the locality, after a period of testing, it has initially brought high economic efficiency to families. In the coming time, the department will continue to support and guide people in the district to replicate this model".
