| Members participate in cleaning up the environment on weekends. |
Awareness from each member
During the Green Sunday movement, Ms. Le Thi Yen, a member of the Thanh Thuy Chanh Women's Association, was one of the first to arrive. Her hourly cleaning job for guests was already very busy, and after the flood it became even more so, but on weekends, she did not hesitate to put aside her personal work to join the women in the general cleaning.
“Everyone is working hard, but seeing the clean roads and airy residential areas makes me happy. Each person contributes a little bit so that the village can truly revive after the flood,” said Ms. Yen. That spirit of volunteerism and solidarity has become familiar to the people of Thanh Thuy, not only in the days after the flood but has also become a habit.
Every flood season, a huge amount of garbage and mud is left behind. Together with other departments and organizations, women are one of the pioneers who have been present from the beginning, persistently cleaning up each neighborhood.
Not only stopping at cleaning, the Women's Union of the ward also actively propagates disease prevention and control after floods, instructing women to properly dispose of waste to limit environmental pollution.
Ms. Le Thanh - a member of the Thanh Toan Women's Union, is also one of the members who has formed a green lifestyle for herself and her family members. Before bringing the garbage to the collection point, she always clearly sorts it. In her daily life, she minimizes the use of plastic bags and disposable plastic items. She has maintained this habit for many years, helping her family significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste. "If I can reduce the use of just one plastic bag every day, it is already useful. The important thing is that my children and grandchildren see it as normal and necessary," Ms. Thanh shared.
Action from the smallest habits
To form habits and awareness for each citizen, first of all each member, the Women's Union of the ward has deployed a series of effective environmental protection models such as: "Green house - turning garbage into money", "Classifying garbage at source", "Women living green", "Limiting the use of plastic bags", "Green - clean - garbage-free routes"... From these models, the branches have raised funds to support women in difficulty and children.
In order to reduce plastic waste, the Ward Women's Union has organized communication campaigns and given environmentally friendly bags to members to bring to the market instead of plastic bags. This is a practical activity, which has received strong response from the women. Because, just by replacing plastic bags with cloth bags, plastic boxes, plastic baskets... each member can reduce hundreds of bags per month. These are small changes but create a big impact. The Union also combines online propaganda and social networking applications to spread knowledge of waste classification and recycling more quickly.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Ngan, Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, President of the Thanh Thuy Ward Women's Union affirmed: "The environmental protection movements implemented by the Ward Women's Union do not stop at cleaning up, but have become habits and beautiful lifestyles of many families. The good news is that the movement is spreading more and more strongly. Especially after the flood, the role of women is even more evident. It is women who are the force contributing to creating a green - clean - bright appearance for the ward."
Ms. Ngan said that the Thanh Thuy Ward Women's Union is striving to implement bigger goals in the coming time. In particular, 100% of the branches register for green - clean - waste-free routes; support 20 - 25 women to start businesses associated with green livelihoods...
