Nearly 6 years have passed, but Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga (Tuyen Thanh commune, Kien Tuong town, Long An province) still remembers clearly the day she went to see a doctor, then the doctor invited more relatives to announce the results. "She has acute myeloid leukemia, a form of blood cancer " - The doctor's brief announcement was like "a thunderclap in the ear".

Mrs. Nga sadly said: "My husband and I tried to save up and borrow more money to build a small, solid house in 2016. Before we could be happy and pay off all our debts, we discovered we had this serious illness ..."

Every day, Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga (Tuyen Thanh commune, Kien Tuong town) sells dumplings to earn extra money to pay for medicine.

When she first discovered her illness, she spent more days in the hospital than at home. After that, she went to the hospital every month for monitoring, check-ups, and medication adjustments when necessary. She considered her life extended to this day to be fortunate. Now, her health has weakened a lot, and every time she eats or drinks, she feels pain. Sometimes for days on end, she does not dare to eat or drink anything other than water. Seeing her so weak and haggard, her acquaintances feel sorry for her.

The conversation was occasionally interrupted by her pain and shortness of breath. However, Mrs. Nga still tried to open an additional stall selling dumplings every morning to earn money for her follow-up visits. On days when she was healthy and had many supporters, she sold 20-30 dumplings, earning less than 100,000 VND.

Ms. Nga shared: “The first year I was diagnosed with the disease, I received support so I didn’t have to spend money on medicine. In the second year, I no longer received support so I had to buy medicine myself. Each month, the medicine costs 7-8 million VND, and gradually my family’s situation became more and more exhausted.”

Her children have their own families and lives, and can only take care of her partially. Her comfort over the years has been the thoughtful care of her husband, Mr. Cao Van Luy. Unable to bear the pain of her illness, he can only do the housework for her and take care of her meals.

After preparing meals for his wife, he rode his old motorbike, pulling a cargo box, to collect scrap metal . Despite his severe joint pain, he still went to collect scrap metal every day to earn a few hundred thousand dong for his wife's medical treatment.

Having participated in the work of the Red Cross for nearly 20 years, currently the President of the Red Cross of Ward 3, Kien Tuong town, Ms. Nga cannot remember how many times she has mobilized benefactors to help the less fortunate, share the pain with the poor and sick, give them a support, and light up their faith. Yet...

When she herself became seriously ill, she considered it her fate, did not consider the good deeds she had done as a favor and did not expect anyone to repay her. “I do it out of responsibility and heart, I will do what needs to be done. For over a month now, my health has been much weaker, just being able to talk like this makes me feel happy,” Ms. Nga confided.

Knowing that her illness is unlikely to be cured, she only wishes that she still has enough time to help all the difficult situations that she had planned but had not had the conditions to do. Because for her, besides her family, joy and happiness is seeing the unfortunate situations that she has mobilized to support overcome difficulties day by day. Now, her only wish is to have more time to live.../.
