The diversity of MU

San Mames Stadium is ready for one of the most important parties in European football: the 2024/25 Europa League final between MU and Tottenham - representatives from the foggy country.

This is a very special final. MU and Tottenham both want to win to save a season with too many problems.

United are currently 16th, with 18 defeats - figures they have never had in the Premier League era. Ruben Amorim even considered handing in his resignation in January, before deciding to stay.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are 17th in the Premier League - just above the relegation zone. This result makes it likely that coach Ange Postecoglou will lose his job.

Between the two miserly sides, victory in Bilbao - where every flight was sold out as 70,000 English visitors watched the game - would guarantee qualification for next season's Champions League.

MU is rated by experts as having a higher chance of lifting the trophy at San Mames. The Red Devils have more experience in Europe, with 6 different titles - including the 2016/17 Europa League title under Jose Mourinho.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have not won a European title since the 1983/84 UEFA Cup (now the Europa League).

In addition, in all competitions, Spurs' most recent title was the 2007/08 League Cup, with a comeback win over Chelsea 2-1 in the final (Jonathan Woodgate scored in extra time; Didier Drogba opened the scoring, Berbatov equalized).

Another factor that helps MU be rated higher than Tottenham is personnel. The Red Devils have 10 players scoring 2 or more goals in the Europa League, while Spurs have 7 cases.

Tottenham are heavily reliant on Dominic Solanke, who has scored five goals in his last three Europa League games: the second leg of the quarter-finals and two legs of the semi-finals.

In the MU squad, Bruno Fernandes leads with 7 goals. Rasmus Hojlund was criticized but also scored 6 goals. Diogo Dalot (3), Casemiro (2), Joshua Zirkzee (2), Amad Diallo (2), Eriksen (2), Kobbie Mainoo (2), Harry Maguire (2) also know how to shine at the right time.

Another factor is Mason Mount, who missed much of the season with injury. He returned towards the end and made some contributions, with two goals in the Europa League.

Mason Mount Value

“It’s great to have Mount back. He plays in midfield, on the wing, and he’s great with his back to goal,” Ruben Amorim praised a few weeks ago.

Mason Mount's two goals were a brace against Bilbao in the second leg of the semi-final at Old Trafford. The Spanish side were giving United a hard time, and the former Chelsea man came on and scored a brace to end any hopes his opponents had.

Mount's ability to start is still a question mark, due to physical factors. However, he is still considered Ruben Amorim's secret weapon in the final.

Mount was Chelsea's playmaker, with the team winning the 2020/21 Champions League final against Man City in Porto.

At Chelsea, during his peak period under Thomas Tuchel, Mount was very familiar with the 3-4-2-1 system. He and Kai Havertz played behind Timo Werner in the 2021 final at the Dragao Stadium.

Ruben Amorim has stuck to the 3-4-2-1 system, even when United suffered heavy defeats. Mount played in five of the first six games for the former Sporting Lisbon boss, until he picked up an injury in the Manchester derby at the Etihad.

During his time on the sidelines, the 26-year-old showed his importance by supporting his teammates and the younger players to adapt to the demands of Amorim.

Mount's presence in the team will help Bruno Fernandes to be free and find more space. They complement each other, which also benefits the striker.

Mason Mount has been one of the most talented midfielders to emerge from English football in the last decade. Now he is expected to make the difference for United in the final against Tottenham.
