MU welcomes new player with price of 85 million euros

The Athletic confirmed that MU reached an agreement to recruit striker Benjamin Sesko with a contract worth 85 million euros, including 8.5 million euros in additional fees.

Sesko chose MU even though Newcastle offered a better price.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano used the familiar phrase "Here we go" to confirm the deal was completed on the evening of August 7. The Slovenian player was allowed to undergo a medical examination before completing the sensational transfer deal.

Previously, Newcastle reached an agreement with Leipzig for 82.5 million euros plus 2.5 million euros in additional fees. However, Sesko preferred to choose MU. The "Red Devils" quickly closed the deal with a lower fee, but met Leipzig's expectations thanks to a smooth negotiation process and determination to quickly conclude the deal.

Newcastle have a place in the Champions League next season, while MU are out of all European cup competitions. However, the attractiveness of MU's brand, long-term orientation and position in the Premier League are enough to convince the 22-year-old striker.

Sesko scored 21 goals for Leipzig last season and has a total of 39 goals in 87 games since joining the club in 2023. He is considered a powerful rough diamond, 1m95 tall, good speed, the ability to finish with both feet and impressive headers. Many people call Sesko "the new Haaland" thanks to his explosive, decisive playing style and fearlessness in collision.

Sesko promises to help MU solve the attack problem.

MU has been following Sesko since 2019 when he was playing for NK Domzale. Until now, they have truly owned the "penalty box monster" they have long been aiming for. Despite his great potential, the pressure at Old Trafford is not easy to overcome, especially for a young striker who has never played in England.

The Sesko deal brings MU's total spending this summer to more than 200 million euros, after recruiting Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. If adding on fees, agent fees and other expenses, the amount the "Red Devils" spend on the attack line is close to 250 million euros, extending the series of bustling shopping since Sir Jim Ratcliffe took over the team in early 2024.

Despite the huge spending, MU still applies the payment method in installments, helping the club control cash flow well. Deals such as Cunha and Mbeumo are divided into many installments over 3-4 years. This is a flexible financial approach to balance ambition and budget, when the "Red Devils" still have to be wary of financial limits (PSR).

If Sesko adapts quickly and develops his potential, this could be a signing that changes the game of MU's attack for many seasons to come. But if not, it will be a big gamble at Old Trafford, a place that has never been easy for any young striker.
