US announces first roadmap on artificial intelligence in cybersecurity

CISA's roadmap is the first formal guidance on AI application management in the US.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA)/US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has just released its first roadmap on artificial intelligence ( AI).

This initiative is consistent with President J. Biden’s recent executive order directing DHS to promote global AI safety standards, protect America’s critical infrastructure and networks, and address the potential for AI weaponization.

The initiative emphasizes the responsible, ethical, and safe use of AI, consistent with constitutional principles and relevant laws and policies.

The Roadmap includes five strategic issues, which are intended to guide specific initiatives and articulate CISA's responsible approach to AI in cybersecurity, including: Using AI responsibly to support CISA's mission; Assessing and assuring AI systems; Protecting critical infrastructure from negative AI impacts; Collaborating and communicating on important AI advances; and Providing AI expertise to the workforce.

DHS Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas commented: “DHS has a broad leadership role in promoting the responsible use of AI, and this cybersecurity initiative is an important element of our work.

CISA's roadmap outlines steps the agency will take as part of its efforts to leverage the potential of AI and mitigate its risks to critical infrastructure and US cyber defenses.”

“AI is a powerful technology that holds great promise for enhancing America’s cybersecurity, but it also poses enormous risks,” said CISA Director Jen Easterly.

Our AI Roadmap, which focuses on the nexus between AI, cyber defense, and critical infrastructure, sets out a comprehensive plan to advance the use of AI to enhance cybersecurity.”
