On July 25, US officials strongly criticized the French government for opening a criminal investigation into billionaire Elon Musk's social network X (formerly Twitter), over suspicions related to interference in the political environment in France.
The US State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor said that as part of a criminal investigation, a French prosecutor requested access to X's proprietary algorithm and classified X as an "organized crime group."
Previously, on July 11, cybercrime prosecutors in Paris requested an investigation into allegations of manipulation and data extraction from automated systems, suspecting that a criminal organization was behind it.
The investigation stems from two complaints filed in January 2025 (including one by Eric Bothorel, a lawmaker from President Emmanuel Macron's ruling party), alleging that X's algorithms were used to interfere in French politics.
X denied all allegations, claiming that the investigation was “politically motivated,” and refused to provide algorithms and real-time data as requested by French investigators.
Billionaire Musk, head of electric car maker Tesla and technology company SpaceX, has caused controversy in Europe after he publicly supported the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of the German parliamentary election in February 2025./.
