US officials on July 25 strongly criticized the French government for opening a criminal investigation into billionaire Elon Musk's social network X (formerly Twitter), over suspicions related to interference in the political environment in France.
The US State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor said that as part of a criminal investigation, a French prosecutor requested access to X's proprietary algorithm and classified X as 'organized crime.'
Previously, on July 11, anti-cybercrime prosecutors in Paris requested an investigation into allegations of manipulating and extracting data from an automated system, suspecting that a criminal organization was behind it.
The investigation stems from two complaints filed in January 2025 (including one by MP Eric Bothorel of President Emmanuel Macron's ruling party), alleging that X's algorithms were used to interfere in French politics.
X denied all allegations, saying the investigation was “politically motivated,” and refused to provide algorithms and real-time data as requested by French investigators.
Billionaire Musk, head of electric car maker Tesla and technology company SpaceX, has caused controversy in Europe after he publicly supported the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of the German parliamentary election in February 2025./.
