According to the report of the Department of Forestry (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the export value of forestry products in the first 6 months of 2024 is estimated at 7.95 billion USD, up 21.2% over the same period in 2023, reaching 52.3% of the plan. Notably, some major markets increased sharply such as the US reaching 4.38 billion USD, up 27.6% over the same period in 2023; China reaching 1.059 billion USD, up 46.6%.
Estimated trade surplus in the first 6 months of 2024: 6.664 billion USD, up 21.6%. The product with the largest trade surplus is wood and wood products (6.16 billion USD, up 22.5%).
According to the Forestry Department, the implementation of payments for forest environmental services has also achieved positive results. In the first 6 months of the year, the country has collected 1,521.16 billion VND, of which, revenue from carbon credit transactions under the ERPA agreement is 239.58 billion VND. Payment for forest environmental services, including carbon absorption and storage services, has been effectively implemented, becoming an important and sustainable financial source for the forestry sector; developing agroforestry, non-timber forest products and medicinal herbs under the forest canopy, and developing sustainable tourism associated with forests.

Regarding forest development, the area of newly planted concentrated forests reached 125,500 hectares, reaching 51.2% of the plan, up 1.2% over the same period; the whole year is estimated to reach about 245,000 hectares, reaching 100% of the yearly plan. Scattered tree planting reached 44.6 million trees, up 2.9% over the same period last year, the whole year is estimated to reach 130 million trees.
The Forestry Department stated that to achieve this result, the industry has focused on drastic direction, providing timely and appropriate solutions; the direction and management work closely follows the goal of sustainable forestry development, linking the chain from forest development, forest protection, forest use to processing and trading forest products to increase forest value.
Innovate the growth model from relying on expanding area and volume to focusing on improving productivity, quality and added value of forestry products, enhancing the multi-purpose value of forest ecosystems. Many localities pay attention to seed quality management, the rate of planted forest area with seed quality control reaching 85%.
Notably, many localities have actively planted large timber forests, converted small timber forests into large timber forests; implemented sustainable forest management and forest certification, to date 495,000 hectares have been granted forest certification.
Also according to the Forestry Department, in the first 6 months of 2024, many legal documents related to the forestry sector were issued, such as: Decree No. 04/2024/ND-CP dated January 12, 2024, Decree amending and supplementing a number of articles of Decree No. 118/2014/ND-CP dated December 17, 2014 of the Government on arrangement, innovation and development, improving the operational efficiency of agricultural and forestry companies; Decree No. 58/2024/ND-CP dated May 24, 2024, Decree on a number of investment policies in forestry. This Decree takes effect from July 15, 2024.
In addition, the Forestry Department has been implementing on schedule, ensuring the quality of the development of Decrees and Circulars under the 2024 plan: Proposal to amend and supplement a number of articles of the Forestry Law; Decree regulating the liquidation of planted forests; Decree regulating the cultivation and development of medicinal plants in forests; Circular amending and supplementing a number of articles of Circular No. 15/2019/TT-BNNPTNT dated October 30, 2019 guiding a number of contents on investment management of forestry works; Circular amending and supplementing a number of articles of Circular No. 12/2022/TT-BNNPTNT dated September 20, 2022 guiding a number of forestry activities to implement the Sustainable Forestry Development Program and the National Target Program on Socio -Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period, Phase I: from 2021 to 2025; Circular stipulating economic and technical norms for measuring and marking 3 types of forests.
In the first 6 months of 2024, the Department of Forestry will continue to closely follow the progress of developing legal documents, programs and projects; continue to implement Conclusion No. 61 of the Secretariat on continuing to implement Directive No. 13; Forestry Development Strategy; Sustainable Forestry Development Program for the period 2021 - 2025; and key programs and projects that have been developed.
Strengthening the management of forestry seed quality, focusing on the selection and creation of high-tech forestry seed, indigenous trees, and intensive forest cultivation suitable for the ecosystem to increase productivity and output of planted forests, and develop large timber production forests. Developing forms of association, cooperation, and benefit sharing in the forestry production and business chain.
Continue to effectively implement the policy of payment for forest environmental services, promote the implementation of carbon absorption and storage services and develop the forest carbon credit market.
Implement activities on biodiversity conservation of forest ecosystems; ecotourism, resorts, entertainment; sustainable use of forest environment.
Continue to organize and implement tasks and solutions for sustainable development of the wood processing and export forestry industry; coordinate in preventing trade fraud; closely follow and develop operational scenarios for the export and import of wood and forestry products to ensure the achievement of the 2024 plan targets.
