Nadal has been voted the “Greatest” athlete and most admired sports figure in Spain by the Spanish people in a recent study conducted by the El Piponazo de Grefusa brand.
The top 5 of this list also includes athletes from football, basketball and F1. Surprisingly, the king of sports did not make it into the top 3 positions.
According to Marca, the campaign, launched by El Piponazo, aims to celebrate the most beloved athletes, moments and traditions in Spanish pop culture. The goal of the campaign is to find someone who deserves the title of “The Greatest” and turn them into an icon – or “El Piponazo” for the whole country.
Nadal voted Spain's greatest athlete
The tennis player from the Balearic Islands leads the rankings with nearly 50% of the votes, far surpassing other famous names such as Pau Gasol - basketball (25%) and F1 driver, Fernando Alonso (22.1%).
The next positions on the list are Andres Iniesta (17%), Lamine Yamal (14.2%) and Olympic tennis champion Carolina Marin (13.7%), showing that sports always hold a special place in the hearts of the Spanish people.
In addition to the above vote, Iniesta also won the cultural icon category in the voting campaign.
When it comes to the biggest historical milestones in Spanish popular culture, Iniesta's goal in the 2010 World Cup final won 62.9% of the votes, far ahead of memorable moments such as the Barcelona 92 Olympics (35.7%), Nadal's Roland Garros finals (35%) or the kiss between Casillas and Sara Carbonero (18.2%).
