From 2022, the two groups will join hands to research and produce 5G Open RAN broadcasting stations. After only 2 years, Viettel became the first partner in the world to put 5G Open RAN broadcasting stations using Qualcomm chipsets into trial deployment.
It is expected that in 2025, more than 2,000 5G Open RAN stations will be deployed by Viettel on a large scale, affirming Viettel's ability to master 5G technology.
Notably, the product has been exported by Viettel to the Middle East market. This is a step forward to make Vietnam one of the 6 countries in the world with the capacity to produce 5G network equipment. This project has just been nominated for the "Open RAN Excellence" category at the Network X Awards 2025 taking place in Paris - France this coming October.
In addition, Viettel and Qualcomm successfully developed the world's first 5G AI Camera for smart traffic, which has been widely deployed in the field of smart traffic in Vietnam and is being exported to a number of international markets.
Viettel and Qualcomm will continue to launch research and development projects with the goal of Viettel mastering strategic technologies, including: 5G/6G infrastructure, AI-based smart network management system, AI processing infrastructure, data center infrastructure, AI solutions for governments and businesses, 5G/6G smart terminals such as AI cameras, phones, tablets, computers, AIoT, etc.
These are all technologies and products in the group of 11 strategic technologies announced by the Government, contributing to realizing the goal of making the digital economy contribute 30% of Vietnam's GDP by 2030.
Viettel and Qualcomm sign many new cooperation agreements
At the meeting, Qualcomm Chairman and CEO Cristiano Amon said that what makes the relationship between Viettel and Qualcomm special is that the two corporations have a long history of cooperation, with the same desire to develop breakthrough solutions that bring value to customers.
"Viettel is different from many other businesses in that it has a strong R&D team, especially the spirit of dedication, ready to solve difficult problems with Qualcomm. That spirit is the reason why we want to accompany Viettel" - Mr. Cristiano Amon said.
Lieutenant General Tao Duc Thang - Chairman and General Director of Viettel Group also said that the Qualcomm CEO's visit to Vietnam and Viettel this time is very timely, when the Vietnamese technology business community is being given a great mission by the State in researching and applying technology to develop the country. Deeper cooperation between the two groups in the next phase will certainly open up historic opportunities, making Vietnam a leading technology center in the region."
After the signing of the cooperation agreement, Mr. Cristiano Amon had a sharing session with Viettel's leaders and technology experts globally about new technology trends, practical application of solutions and experience in building a multinational organization.
Viettel installs 1,700 5G stations to serve the grand ceremony
With 1,700 newly installed broadcasting stations, Viettel's 5G network will cover all parade and march locations as well as events celebrating the 80th anniversary of National Day September 2. It is expected that about 2.9 million people will flock to the parade and march areas, of which about 900,000 will travel from other provinces and cities. Compared to normal days, people's needs are not only to surf the web or watch movies, but also to livestream, make video calls, post high-quality photos and videos. Each person, with a smartphone in hand, will become a "mobile TV station", creating unprecedented pressure on the network.

To meet customer needs, for the first time, AI has been used by Viettel engineers to predict the future. Based on data on event schedules, flight tickets, hotel rooms, posts, and likes on social networks, Viettel engineers have used AI models to predict the most crowded locations, "hot" times, and travel behavior. From there, network resources will be reasonably ensured. The X-Optimization (XO) system combined with AI helps optimize network quality according to customer behavior. The system continuously monitors the network and automatically makes adjustments in almost real time.
