Improving school health care

In the context of complicated epidemic developments and increasing demand for student health care, school health work at educational institutions in the province has had many positive changes.

The whole province has 1,379 educational establishments, with more than 700,000 students. Ensuring initial health for them has become an important task, contributing to building a safe and healthy educational environment.

In recent years, many schools have proactively coordinated with the health sector to organize communication on epidemics and school diseases such as refractive errors, tooth decay, scoliosis, seasonal diseases and food hygiene and safety. This is considered a key solution to raise awareness and disease prevention skills for students.

At Phan Dang Luu Primary School (Ea Kao Ward), propaganda work is maintained regularly through the coordination between the school and Ea Tam Health Station. Ms. Huynh Bich Ha, Principal of the school, informed: Every year, all students are informed about contagious diseases such as pink eye, diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, and are vaccinated and given booster shots according to the schedule of the health sector.

At Tran Quoc Toan Secondary School (Tuy Hoa Ward), Mr. Bui Anh Tuan, the school's principal, said that the school has 1,508 students in 37 classes. Every year, the school disinfects to prevent dengue fever, organizes communication about infectious diseases, food safety, adolescent reproductive health care and the harmful effects of e-cigarettes. "These activities help students form the habit of protecting their own health, proactively recognizing abnormal signs to effectively prevent diseases," Mr. Tuan shared.

Baby 2 Kindergarten (Tuy Hoa ward) cooperated with medical staff to examine the health of children in the school.

Le Thi Bich Hanh, a 9th grade student at Tran Quoc Toan Secondary School, said: “Thanks to the propaganda sessions, we know more about common diseases and how to prevent them. This is very useful for us.”

Besides communication, many schools focus on regular health check-ups to detect school diseases early and monitor students' physical condition.

"The monitoring results of the Department of Education and Training show that most schools have maintained good monitoring of students' health, coordinated regular health check-ups, ensured environmental hygiene, facilities, lighting and arranged medical rooms according to regulations. The connection between schools, families and communities is increasingly focused on, creating an effective and sustainable student health support system - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training Vo Thi Minh Duyen.

At Phan Dang Luu Primary School, students receive health check-ups three times a year, at the beginning, middle and end of the year. The check-ups include measuring vision, height, weight, general examination and taking deworming medicine. This activity helps the school monitor development and detect disease risks in order to provide timely advice.

At the preschool level, the need for health care is given top priority. Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy, Principal of Baby 2 Kindergarten (Tuy Hoa Ward), said: The school has 367 children, who receive health check-ups twice a year. “Through the results of the check-ups, the school adjusts the menu, ensuring balanced nutrition to prevent both malnutrition and obesity,” Ms. Thuy said.

Currently, in schools, school health workers not only provide first aid or primary care but also participate in psychological counseling, personal hygiene instruction, coordinate nutritional checks and support schools in seasonal disease prevention activities. In mountainous and remote areas, health workers also play a role as a bridge between schools, parents and students, especially in semi-boarding and boarding schools.

According to the Department of Education and Training, school health care is a key task that the sector pays special attention to. Every year, the Department of Education and Training coordinates with the Department of Health to organize inspections at schools, promptly instructing and correcting units with shortcomings to improve the quality of student health care.
