According to Interfax news agency on August 26, Russia's Northern Fleet conducted naval exercises in the Barents Sea this month to deter foreign vessels from illegally entering its waters.
The Northern Fleet said the destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov "practiced intercepting a simulated intruder" in the Arctic Ocean off the northern coasts of Norway and Russia. The exercise began on August 10 and has not yet been announced how long it will last.

The Northern Fleet plans to conduct further exercises to "protect Russia's territorial waters and land in the Arctic, as well as ensure the safety of Russian maritime navigation and other maritime economic activities in the Arctic region."
Russia has repeatedly deployed fighter jets to intercept foreign aircraft approaching its borders. On August 23, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that its MiG-29 fighter jets had intercepted a Norwegian aircraft approaching the Russian border over the Barents Sea. A similar incident occurred on August 15, and Russia quickly deployed MiG-29s to intercept a Norwegian reconnaissance aircraft approaching its border.
