Rosfinmonitoring did not say why Mr Kasparov was added to the list. Russia often refers to those who disagree with the military operation in Ukraine as “extremists” or “foreign agents”.

The 60-year-old former world chess champion has repeatedly spoken out against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He is widely considered one of the world's greatest chess players and has lived in the United States for more than a decade, where he has focused on political activism.
