Old movement
Red scarves on their shoulders, four boys and a girl are in a biology practice class. Based on the large test tube with a specimen of a soaked frog as well as the frog on the dissection table, it can be recognized that it is a frog dissection exercise. That is how learning and practicing is. The photo was taken at Bac Ly Secondary School ( Ha Nam province) around the 1960s and is displayed in the special exhibition Patriotic Emulation - Nurturing Green Seeds, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's call for patriotic emulation (June 11, 1948 - June 11, 2023), at the National History Museum.
President Ho Chi Minh visited and talked with delegates attending the National Congress of Agricultural and Labor Exchange Soldiers, February 28, 1956.
Dr. Nguyen Van Doan, Director of the National History Museum, said that at the time the photo was taken, Bac Ly Secondary School was the leading school inthe education sector in implementing the motto "Learning must go hand in hand with practice, theory must be linked to reality, and the school must be closely linked to society". This was the origin of the "Two Goods" emulation movement (teaching well and learning well). The "Bac Ly Drum" emulation movement quickly became one of the typical emulation movements of the education sector at that time.
In addition to the images of Bac Ly, on display are also photos of members of the Dai Phong Cooperative (Le Thuy District, Quang Binh Province) - the homeland of the "Gio Dai Phong" emulation movement in agriculture. They are witnessing the tractor - a reward from President Ho Chi Minh to the Cooperative making the first plowing in June 1961. There are also photos of a technical demonstration by workers of the Duyen Hai Mechanical Factory (Hai Phong). They were the leading flag of the Northern industry in the 1960s.
There were many such people and movements in the 1960s, the period of patriotic emulation following Uncle Ho's call. They created "Bac Ly Drum", "Gio Dai Phong"... and then became the leading flag of emulation heroes and soldiers. A photo document in the exhibition shows that Prime Minister Pham Van Dong took a souvenir photo with them at the 3rd Congress of Emulation Heroes and Soldiers, which took place in May 1962.
Besides competing in production and study, competing in combat is also equally exciting. Photo documents show that Northern youth participated in the movement "Splitting Truong Son to save the country" during the resistance war against the US to save the country. There is a photo of a female guerrilla from Dai Xuan (Quang Binh province) in the emulation movement "Produce while fighting"; Southern youth volunteers used their shoulders as bridges to transfer wounded soldiers across the river during the "5 volunteers" movement during the resistance war against the US to save the country...

75 years of patriotic emulation
According to the National History Museum, 75 years ago, when the resistance war against French colonialism was at its fiercest stage, on June 11, 1948, President Ho Chi Minh issued a call for patriotic emulation. The call aimed to call on all people to actively compete to eradicate hunger, illiteracy, and foreign invaders, making the resistance war quickly victorious and the nation building successful.
That competitive flow can be seen throughout all three exhibition sections of Patriotic Emulation - Nurturing Green Seeds. In section 1, named after President Ho Chi Minh and the "Patriotic Emulation" movement, his call is displayed: "Emulation is patriotism, patriotism requires emulation. And, those who emulate are the most patriotic." The Party Central Committee established the Patriotic Emulation Campaign Committee from the Central to the local level and launched an emulation movement to mobilize all forces to participate in the resistance war and national construction.
In this section, there are images of President Ho Chi Minh attending patriotic emulation congresses; congresses at all levels and sectors; his attention, encouragement and motivation for collectives and individuals with achievements in the patriotic emulation movement. Uncle Ho's handwritten documents are also present here.
Part 2: Emulation is patriotism - Patriotism requires emulation to show that the whole people together fight against and successfully build the country. Here is a group of documents about outstanding patriotic emulation movements in all three regions of the North - Central - South. In the South, the emulation movements "Stick to the land and protect the village"; "Not moving an inch, not moving a millimeter"; "Kill the enemy and make achievements", "5 volunteers"... developed widely. In the North, there were "Song Duyen Hai" in industrial production; "Gio Dai Phong" in agricultural production; "Co ba nhat" in the army; "Trong Bac Ly" in education; "Thanh nien ba chan ba duong"; "Phu nu ba duong"...

This section includes artifacts of the rice jars of the Ngan Son women's resistance war (Bac Kan province) responding to the "Rice jars to save from hunger" movement launched by President Ho Chi Minh during the resistance war against French colonialism; images of the popular education class in Tien Giang responding to the "Elimination of illiteracy" movement in 1951...
Part 3 Youth Aspiration - Nurturing green shoots associated with youth movements such as "Thousands of good deeds", "Creative youth", "Youth volunteers", "Youth volunteers protecting the Fatherland"... This topic has images of young people nationwide competing in patriotism; some images and artifacts of the Green Saigon group (HCMC) with the environmental protection movement; images, artifacts, tools, teaching aids and creative products of students and teachers of Trung Vuong Secondary School (Hanoi) made from recycled materials...
"Under the light of his ideology on patriotic emulation, through successive stages with different names, contents and forms of expression, the patriotic emulation movement has developed in a continuous flow, contributing significantly to the great victories of the Vietnamese revolution over the past seven decades," said Dr. Nguyen Van Doan.
