Mekong Connect 2024 is sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development , the Ministry of Science and Technology, co-organized and chaired by the People's Committee of An Giang province and the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. Along with that is the companionship of the provinces and cities: Ben Tre, Can Tho, Dong Thap, Hau Giang and Vinh Long.
Attending the event, Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial Business Association Tran Van Duc - Chairman of Ben Tre Coconut Investment Joint Stock Company (Beinco) presented a speech: "Ben Tre enhances the coconut value chain in export with new technology".
Mr. Tran Van Duc introduced the coconut value chain using new technology with modern machinery and equipment to produce value-added products and diverse products from coconut by-products in Ben Tre.
The Mekong Delta region accounts for 88.1% of the country's coconut area, with about 171 thousand hectares. Of which, Ben Tre is the province with the largest coconut growing area in the region with more than 78 thousand hectares. Ben Tre has more than 200 products manufactured and processed from coconut for consumption and export to 90 countries and territories. The export market for coconut products continues to be maintained and expanded by businesses.
From the analysis, it shows the potential of coconut trees and the advantages of local resources to have solutions to improve the value chain and coconut output. Currently, Vietnamese coconut ranks 5th in the world after: Philippines, Indonesia, India, Brazil and the whole country currently has over 90 enterprises exporting coconut products, the export turnover in 2023 is over 900 million USD, Ben Tre's coconut export turnover is nearly 500 million USD/year.
The coconut industry includes food and beverage production, essential oil production in the medical field, activated carbon, handicrafts, coconut cosmetics, etc. Currently, science and technology are shaping the direction of the Ben Tre coconut industry with new products that not only bring high value to the coconut processing industry, meeting diverse health and nutritional needs, but also aim towards green growth, low carbon and will contribute more positively towards the export turnover from coconut exceeding 1 billion USD.
Thereby, he also made recommendations: Coconut trees have been approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as key industrial crops such as coffee, rubber, tea, cashew, pepper; coconut brand has been raised domestically and internationally; there is a policy for comprehensive development of coconut trees, investment in production and processing to limit the export of raw materials, building a mechanism for cooperation - sustainable development of farmers and enterprises towards a green and sustainable economy based on indigenous resources.
