Rail transport will grow the most in 2023.

Transport growth is strong

2023 will see a strong recovery of traditional forms of transport, creating an important premise for the breakthrough of the transport industry from the beginning of 2024. Transportation activities are the goal of infrastructure development and transport policies, directly affecting the lives and production and business activities of enterprises.

It is noted that in 2023, road transport activities are basically stable and in order, fully meeting the convenient and safe travel needs of people and businesses. The Ministry of Transport has directed the organization of a general inspection of the operation of passenger transport vehicles under contract and tourist transport; inspect and strictly handle illegal vehicles, illegal bus stations, and disguised fixed-route vehicles; inspect the management of car transport business activities in 63 localities. Notably, the Ministry of Transport has approved the Project "Strengthening the application of information technology and digital transformation in the road sector for the period 2023 - 2025, with a vision to 2030".

Air transport activities continue to show many signs of rapid recovery, closely following domestic and foreign market demand. By the end of 2023, air transport had reopened routes with 61 foreign airlines and 5 Vietnamese airlines operating 147 international routes connecting Vietnam with 28 countries and territories. The Ministry of Transport has introduced a biometric system and used electronic identification accounts (VNelD) in aviation procedures at all airports, improving the efficiency of coordinating landing and take-off times (slots) at airports through harmoniously combining the response capacity of the system (flight assurance services, terminals, parking lots, access traffic, etc.) with market demand.

One of the transport sectors with the strongest changes in 2023 is railway transport. In addition to innovation, service quality, the rate of Thong Nhat and regional trains running on time is over 99%, arriving on time is from 91 - 93%. The Ministry of Transport has decided to establish a new international transit station at Kep Station ( Bac Giang ), opening an international border gate in the country; opening many international transit trains to transport export goods from Song Than and Yen Vien stations to China...

Inland waterway and maritime transport sectors have gradually recovered slowly. The Ministry of Transport has focused on training human resources, allocating investment resources to resolve bottlenecks on waterway transport corridors and public maritime routes, attracting investment in important seaport areas with large cargo demand, focusing on developing the sea transport fleet and inland waterway vehicles, cutting and simplifying administrative procedures, applying information technology, implementing and proposing exemptions and reductions of fees, charges and related taxes. The volume of goods through the seaport system has maintained growth momentum over the years and handled a large volume of import and export goods.

Tighten transportation business activities, improve service quality

In 2024, the Ministry of Transport will continue to restructure the transport market towards reducing the market share of road transport and increasing the market share of waterway, maritime, rail and air transport; promoting the application of information technology in operation, management, supervision and handling of violations in transport activities. At the same time, strengthen planned and unscheduled inspections and checks, focusing on business, business conditions for transport by car, operation of passenger car stations, compliance with business regulations and business conditions for transport on inland waterway routes; at the same time, review, adjust and supplement legal documents to strictly and effectively manage transport activities in these areas.

In parallel with the above solutions, the Ministry of Transport will study and implement drastic and synchronous solutions to promote the development of waterway transport and river-sea transport; continue to restructure the transport market towards reducing the market share of road transport and increasing the market share of waterway, maritime, rail and air transport.

In addition, the Ministry of Transport continues to implement solutions to support and remove difficulties for businesses and people; focus on developing multimodal transport and logistics services based on the application of science and technology, improving the capacity, efficiency and quality of transport services, reducing logistics costs; enhancing the exploitation, use and improving the efficiency of the data processing system from journey monitoring devices and building a unified information system for managing automobile transport business activities nationwide.

Regarding transport output in 2024, the Ministry of Transport sets a target of increasing cargo volume (tons) by about 7%, passengers by about 8% compared to 2023; cargo turnover volume (tons.km) by about 8.5%, passenger turnover (hk.km) by about 9% compared to the same period in 2023. Regarding the volume of goods passing through Vietnam's seaports in 2024, it is expected to reach about 785 million tons, an increase of about 4% compared to 2023.
