The foreign object removed was a plastic trumpet - Photo: Provided by the hospital
On April 24, doctors at the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital said that they had successfully performed an endoscopy and removed a plastic trumpet from the left bronchus of a 7-year-old boy.
This boy named D.XP, lives in Dak Nong . Two weeks before being hospitalized, he told his mother that he was playing the trumpet when he started coughing, then he had a dry cough, alternating with a cough with phlegm. Sometimes the mother could hear the sound of the trumpet along with his breathing.
The mother took the baby to two medical facilities for examination, but no foreign object was found and a prescription was given. After taking the medicine, the baby still coughed, so the mother took the baby to the ENT Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for examination.
Here, through medical history and examination, the doctor suspected that the child had a foreign body in the airway, so he ordered a CT scan of the chest. The CT scan results showed that the child had a foreign body in the left bronchus, 10mm long, low-radiation, tubular.
The patient was diagnosed with airway foreign body N15 (left angular bronchus) and underwent the necessary tests for rigid bronchoscopy to remove the foreign body.
The team led by Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, Department of Rhinology, ENT Hospital, performed a rigid bronchoscopy and removed the foreign object, a plastic tube-shaped trumpet. After removing the foreign object, the patient continued to receive medical treatment to prevent infection.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, foreign objects in the airway can cause a number of dangerous complications such as pneumonia, pneumothorax, mediastinitis, and even death if the foreign object is not promptly removed.
Dr. Nguyen Thanh Vinh, deputy director of the ENT Hospital, warned that when a foreign object enters the airway, the patient may have invasion syndrome (coughing, cyanosis, difficulty breathing, wheezing, and respiratory contractions).
Some cases of forgotten foreign bodies in the airways may have persistent cough, chest pain or coughing up blood that do not improve with medical treatment in many places.
Depending on the type of foreign object, it can cause different complications. For example, foreign objects that are inert metals will cause few complications but can move to dangerous structures. Foreign objects such as seeds, fish bones, chicken bones, etc. can easily cause surrounding infections leading to pneumonia, mediastinitis, or abscesses, etc.
Ways to prevent choking on foreign objects such as seeds, fish bones, trumpets...
