Referee suspected of unfairly treating Barca, 'referee' was 'removed' by UEFA

Szymon Marciniak missed the chance to referee the Champions League final this season.

According to Marca , the decision was related to Marciniak's controversial performance in the second leg of the semi-final between Inter and Barcelona. The referee was said to have unfairly judged the La Liga representative. Despite being one of the world's top referees, the serious mistake cost Marciniak the chance to officiate the most prestigious match of the season.

UEFA has given the opportunity to Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs. He will be assisted by two fellow countrymen, Mihai Marica and Ferencz Tunyogi. In the VAR room, the responsibility belongs to Mr. Dennis Johan Higler (Netherlands). This will be the third European Cup final in referee Kovacs' career, after the 2024 Europa League final and the 2022 Conference League final.

In the Conference League final between Real Betis and Chelsea on May 29 in Poland, UEFA appointed Bosnian referee Irfan Peljto as the main referee. The two assistants are Senad Ibrisimbegovic and Davor Beljo, while the VAR room is in charge of French referee Francois Letexier.

Meanwhile, German referee Felix Zwayer will officiate the Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham on May 22, with Bastian Dankert in charge of VAR. Mr. Zwayer has refereed the 2023 Nations League final between Spain and Croatia.

Notably, referee Zwayer has a scandalous past involving match-fixing. In 2005, he was found to have accepted a £250 bribe from referee Robert Hoyzer in a case that shocked German football.

Although only banned for six months, Zwayer is still mentioned in debates about fairness in match management, especially after controversial decisions in big matches.
