Recently, Japanese media reported on the case of a 22-year-old woman named Kato Arisa (加藤ありさ) who was accused of defrauding many men through a dating app, appropriating millions of Japanese yen. The incident was discovered when some victims accidentally met Kato in real life and discovered that her real appearance was "a world apart" from the glamorous images on social networks. According to a victim in his 30s, he had been single for 10 years and always felt self-conscious about his appearance and income. However, Kato did not seem to care about that at all. She was willing to date at cheap restaurants, often texted him to ask how he was doing, and spent time chatting with him.
It was Kato's thoughtful and attentive care that made this man feel moved and gradually developed feelings for her. Taking advantage of that, Kato made up a story that she was an orphaned student, having to shoulder a huge debt after her mother passed away, to borrow money from him. Using the same trick, Kato scammed at least two other men, including a man in his 40s who was "pickpocketed" by her for 720,000 Japanese yen (equivalent to 148 million VND). This person said that Kato "bathed him in honey" with sweet words and enticed him. She deliberately created the image of an innocent, pure student, who had lost her mother at a young age and had to shoulder a huge debt from her late mother.
Believing Kato, the man did not hesitate to transfer a large sum of money to her without any suspicion. It is worth noting that because the victims all transferred cash to Kato without any loan documents, when the incident was discovered, the police could not investigate. Currently, the police are still collecting evidence and investigating Kato's fraudulent behavior. This incident once again raises the alarm about love fraud, especially through online dating applications.
