(NLDO) - Virtual people (avatars) created by artificial intelligence (AI) can sell more orders than real people, according to CNBC.

For example, on June 15, Luo Yonghao, one of China's most famous livestreamers, along with co-host Zhou Xiaomu, used digital versions (AI avatars) of themselves to interact with viewers for more than 6 hours on Baidu's e-commerce livestreaming platform "Youxuan."

Mr. La said this was the first time he had used avatar technology to sell products through live streaming. "The digital human effect scared me. I was a little dizzy," he told his 1.7 million followers on the social media platform Weibo.

The livestream was a surprising success with 13 million viewers and 55 million yuan ($7.65 million) in revenue, showing the great potential of AI avatars to drive sales and attract viewers, and may even surpass real people in the future.

Baidu said Mr. La's first live-streaming on Youxuan last month, which lasted more than four hours, received fewer orders.

According to China Business Network, Mr. La has high requirements for his digital person. Copying his appearance is not difficult, but the AI needs to be carefully polished to capture his unique speaking style, making people feel both real and familiar.

Furthermore, digital people are faced with complex task scenarios, all kinds of situations such as asking for prices and product information, being teased and joked in the live broadcast room.

A representative from media service provider Be Friends Holding told CNBC that the avatars of Mr. La and his co-host were built using Baidu’s generative AI model, which learned from five years of videos to mimic the jokes and mannerisms of both. Baidu prepared everything in three weeks.

Mr. La started live streaming in April 2020 on ByteDance's short video app Douyin to try to pay off debts from his struggling smartphone company Smartisan. Mr. La's Douyin live streaming account "Be Friends" has nearly 24.7 million followers.

Livestream shopping has exploded in China after the COVID-19 pandemic forced businesses to seek alternative sales channels. More people are turning to livestreaming to earn commissions and virtual gifts amid slowing economic growth.

Livestreaming generated so much sales on Douyin last year that the app surpassed traditional e-commerce company JD.com to become China's second-largest e-commerce platform and took market share from leader Alibaba, according to a report from Worldpanel and Bain & Company last week.

Several Chinese companies, including tech giant Tencent, have developed tools to create digital people to serve as news anchors. In late 2023, some businesses began testing virtual livestreamers during the Singles' Day shopping holiday.
