Quang Yen residents race against time before super typhoon makes landfall

NDO – Over the past few days, fishermen in Quang Yen ( Quang Ninh ) have been racing against time to bring their boats to safe shelters.

3 days ago, as soon as he heard the news of the approaching super typhoon, fisherman Le Van Tu, a resident of Phong Hai ward, hurriedly drove his fishing boat numbered QN-80022 from Bach Long Vi sea area back to the anchorage area in Ha Nam peninsula (Quang Yen) to take shelter.

With many years of experience at sea, Mr. Tu believes that the possibility of storm No. 3 is very high. “We cannot be subjective. We call each other to return to the mainland immediately. Since yesterday, everyone has tied up all boats in the deep water inside the Bach Dang River branch,” said the 43-year-old fisherman while reinforcing the bow of the boat.

“As of today, all familiar boats are present on this sheltered river branch. We just pray that the storm will pass soon, with minimal damage so that everyone can be safe,” Mr. Tu told a reporter from Nhan Dan Newspaper on the afternoon of September 6.

“The boat will be tied down at both the front and the back. We use strong ropes to anchor the boat to sturdy structures on the shore,” Mr. Tu explained.

By the afternoon of September 6, there were about 20 boats anchored in the anchorage area in Tan An ward (Quang Yen). All were firmly reinforced.

Other structures such as factories and docks are also being tied down to cope with the winds which are predicted to be very strong.

Storm preparation work is being urgently completed.

According to statistics, the whole town of Quang Yen has 2,308 fishing boats (113 boats of 15m; 279 boats from 12-15m; 1,097 boats of 6-12m; 819 boats under 6m).

For workers in lagoons and aquaculture cages, they are currently bracing, tying ropes, reinforcing rafts, cages, and at the same time, supplementing food for aquatic animals to ensure they meet nutritional needs during the 2 days of the storm.

A worker is reinforcing a construction site in front of the Bach Dang River, Quang Yen on the afternoon of September 6.

Mr. Le Duc Dien is the owner of a large aquaculture business in Quang Yen. Mr. Dien said that currently, all workers working on his aquaculture cages at sea have been evacuated to the mainland.

“Being at sea for so long, we just hope the storm passes soon so everything can be peaceful.”

Mr. Dien anxiously monitors the situation of the cages at sea through the surveillance camera system.

As of 12:00 on September 6, 100% of ships and boats in Quang Yen town had returned to safe shelters.

On shore, preparations were also completed.

A gas station is reinforced to prevent storm number 3 in Quang Yen town.
