Celebrities falsely advertise: A painful 'blow' with new proposal

The proposal to strip the titles, academic ranks, degrees, etc. from celebrities who advertise falsely is a necessary "blow" to purify and control this problem, especially in cyberspace.

Artists, celebrities, people with academic titles, degrees or titles conferred by the State were once considered symbols of talent, knowledge, and even role models for the public to follow. However, faced with the temptation of money, some people have chosen to "ignore" social responsibility in exchange for personal benefits.

According to Mr. Nguyen Truong Son, Chairman of the Vietnam Advertising Association, a member of the drafting committee of the revised Advertising Law, on April 15, the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Society will invite experts to comment on the draft after it has been revised for the last time. Accordingly, it will propose to strip artists of their titles (NSND, NSUT); strip professors and doctors of their academic titles and degrees when they violate false advertising, in addition to increasing the administrative fine, depending on the severity of the impact on society. Artists may be banned from advertising in any form.

In the era of social media's great influence on consumer behavior, a status line, a review clip, or a livestream selling product by a celebrity or someone with influence on the public can impact millions of people. With that influence, celebrities have become a "living brand", a "trendy salesperson" who can change market developments.

When celebrities use their real reputation and title to create trust and lead the public to "virtual" products, not only are consumers harmed and hurt, but their titles are also tarnished. Given the many reports of famous artists and people with academic titles/degrees advertising falsely, many people believe that administrative fines are not enough. In recent days, the cases of Quang Linh Vlogs and Miss Thuy Tien being delayed from leaving the country have further demonstrated that no one is above the law.

And now, the proposal to strip the titles or academic degrees of famous people who violate the law will also be a necessary cleansing step in the context of chaotic and tumultuous social media. For artists, being stripped of their titles means losing their entire career, making it very difficult to "turn back"; or in other words, that is also the moment when the public's trust, love and admiration completely collapses. This "blow" is painful but very necessary so that true values can return to their rightful place.

In any profession, ethics must always be the foundation. And the more famous you are, the more you must know how to keep that foundation strong. It is undeniable that many artists and celebrities have contributed to spreading cultural values, inspiring healthy living, enriching spiritual life... However, the title has never been a privilege for celebrities to stand outside of ethics and the law.
