On August 8th, Dr. Nguyen Tien Thanh of the Vietnam Dermatology Association reported that he recently received a patient who came for examination with burning and severe hyperpigmentation in the armpits, and was afraid to raise their arms for movement.
According to the woman, after giving birth to her second child, she noticed her armpits were darker than usual, so she tried many folk remedies and topical creams but without improvement.
The patient's armpit area was damaged after treatment at the spa. (Photo provided by the doctor).
Following an advertisement from a spa, she had her underarms whitened using microneedling and chemical peeling. Microneedling is a method that uses a specialized device with a tiny needle to directly puncture the skin's surface. According to the consultant, her underarms would be smooth and white after just one treatment.
During the microneedling procedure, the woman experienced significant pain in both armpits. She was advised that the solution was a skin peel to remove dark spots, and that the more intense the peeling, the faster her armpits would recover.
However, two days after the procedure, both armpits became swollen, red, and oozing profusely. The hyperpigmentation did not improve but worsened, requiring hospitalization. Dr. Thanh stated that the patient suffered from contact dermatitis, a secondary allergic infection, with swelling and redness in both armpits due to invasive treatments and an allergic reaction to the peeling products.
To treat the aforementioned case, the doctor applied solutions to reduce swelling, used low-energy light therapy, administered systemic antibiotics, and prescribed anti-allergic medications.
According to Dr. Thanh, the main causes of dark underarms are improper hygiene of the underarm area, inappropriate use of deodorants or antiperspirants that increase pigmentation, and the use of birth control pills. In addition, this condition can occur due to genetics or hormonal changes.
Methods to address dark underarm skin include using natural ingredients such as salt, honey, and baking soda. Additionally, modern methods like spot lightening or more advanced techniques such as laser and light-based treatments for hyperpigmentation can also improve the condition. However, doctors advise against using underarm whitening products of unknown origin.
