When young people embark on "green" goals

One of the typical examples of green start-up model is Hai Van Clean Energy Joint Stock Company founded and operated by Mr. Truong Tu Long (Thanh Khe Ward, Da Nang City). From piles of leaves and dry branches that were thought to be discarded, this enterprise has researched and applied recycling technology to produce biomass, a clean fuel to replace coal and other fossil fuels.

Currently, his company is a partner of Heineken Da Nang Brewery, Vietnam Dairy Factory ( Vinamilk ) in Da Nang, Bana Rita Farm tourist area, Raku Farm, Da Nang Rubber Joint Stock Company (DRC), Song Han Social One Member Co., Ltd. and a number of other enterprises in Hoa Khanh Industrial Park... The company's average revenue is over 2 billion VND/year in the period of 2023-2024.

Not only stopping at processing tree trunks and branches, chopped leaves are used by Mr. Long to mix with leftover food from restaurants to compost as growing medium - an environmentally friendly product, supporting sustainable agricultural production. Currently, the Company's growing medium is being supplied to tourism farms combined with agriculture in Hoa Ninh, nurseries in Hoa Bac and sold to households...

Mr. Long's green energy regeneration model is directly contributing to reducing the amount of waste released into the environment, especially organic waste - the type of waste that accounts for a large proportion in urban areas. Mr. Long said: "What I want is not only to do business, but also to contribute to changing people's awareness of how to treat waste, that we can completely turn waste into something useful, even create new livelihoods for society."

In addition, the startup model "Moc Xo" of Ms. Vo Thi Ngoc Thu (Thanh Khe ward) is also being recognized by the community as a typical model for the sustainable development trend. Taking the raw material that was thought to be just for waste, with no value, loofah after being harvested by farmers in Duy Xuyen commune, Ms. Thu formed and developed her idea, building the project "Handmade loofah - Natural products" (abbreviated as Moc Xo).

According to Ms. Thu, using loofah not only helps reduce the waste of available agricultural resources in nature but also contributes to environmental protection. That is the obvious benefit from recycling and using this product. From another perspective, Ms. Thu's project is contributing to promoting consumers towards environmentally friendly products, building a green lifestyle.

Currently, Ms. Thu's Moc Xo facility has more than 20 product lines made from loofah fiber divided into 4 sets, including: kitchen products, bathroom products, fashion products and home decoration products. The products introduced by her on the e-commerce platform with the goal of using environmentally friendly products have quickly received support from consumers.

“Currently, I export about 4,000 bath sponges and other products to the US, Canada, Australia and some European countries every month. I sell about 2,000 products in the domestic market alone,” said Ms. Thu.

Towards a green economy

In recent years, many startups in Da Nang have been established with a focus on developing science and technology and innovation. In the trend of “greening” and being environmentally friendly, startups are not only successful with their products but also spreading the spirit of “green startups” to the community.

According to statistics from VCCI, in Da Nang, the rate of enterprises interested in green production and business is increasing significantly. Many enterprises said they received guidance and legal support on the environment, and acknowledged the readiness of public agencies in prioritizing the consumption of environmentally friendly products.

Some businesses also believe that the government can accept higher payments for green products to promote sustainable markets. This shows that green startups are no longer a trend but are becoming an important part of the local economy.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kieu Anh, Director of Go Noi Green Agriculture Cooperative (Dien Ban Ward), shared: “We pursue a circular agriculture model, promoting soil and plant health. After the essential oil distillation process, all by-products are composted into fertilizer, completely eliminating waste discharge into the environment."

Master Pham Ngoc Thach, Deputy Head of the Legal Department of VCCI, commented that the RBC (Responsible Business Conduct) and ESG (Environment – Society – Governance) policies are creating a “new rule of the game” where businesses are forced to transform their production models, invest in clean technology, apply the circular economy and improve their management capacity if they want to survive in the global market. These requirements pose challenges but at the same time create opportunities, especially for young startups that are flexible, easy to transform models and quickly catch up with trends.

Da Nang has set the goal of becoming an “Environmental City”, “Smart City”, and at the same time aims to play the role of a green economic center of the country. In that developing ecosystem, start-up projects such as Hai Van or Moc Xo are not only initial positive signals, but also the foundation for the formation of a green business community in the future.

Each successful project is a testament that circular economy can start from small materials such as dry branches or old squash, if there is creative thinking and a desire to contribute to the community. As green startups spread among young people, Da Nang will move closer to the goal of sustainable development, while at the same time building the image of a city that knows how to nurture kind ideas for the future.
