Risk of skin cancer from skin peeling and whitening baths

Người Lao ĐộngNgười Lao Động01/07/2023

On June 3, sharing on the sidelines of the first National Skin Cancer Conference held in Hanoi , Associate Professor, Dr. Le Huu Doanh, Director of the Central Dermatology Hospital, said that skin cancer is a fairly benign disease if treated early, but many patients come to the hospital when the lesions have deeply invaded the eyelids, ears, lips, nose, even near the skull and meninges.

According to Associate Professor Doanh, skin cancer is currently considered a common cancer in Vietnam as well as in the world . Nearly 70% of skin cancer patients have basal cell carcinoma. This type of cancer tends to be younger.

Associate Professor Le Huu Doanh warns of the risk of skin cancer due to the abuse of skin whitening.

The disease develops mainly on areas exposed to the sun, including the scalp, face, lips, ears, neck, chest, arms, hands, and feet. Lesions can also form on the palms of the hands, under the fingernails/toenails, and the genital area...

Associate Professor Doanh said that in addition to genetic factors, exposure to sunlight, arsenic poisoning, and damage that is not properly treated, the risk of skin cancer also comes from using cosmetics of unknown origin or containing banned substances.

"Currently, many types of skin whitening creams are advertised everywhere, attracting many women to beautify themselves with beautiful words like "white as a peeled egg", "bright and flawless"... However, no one has proven the effectiveness and safety of these products," he warned.

Dermatologists also say that skin whitening will remove the original skin color, which means losing the skin's protective barrier. Skin pigmentation is the body's skin's protective barrier, skin whitening will make the skin's protective barrier increasingly weaker, more vulnerable to UV rays in sunlight, making it easier to get sunburned. If this condition is repeated frequently, the risk of skin cancer will be very high.

The conference with the theme of new advances in diagnosis and treatment was attended by experts from the US, France, Switzerland and doctors in 3 specialties: Dermatology, Hematology and Oncology. Here, experts updated the latest advances in treatment methods; looking for more advanced and effective solutions, so that skin cancer is no longer a challenge.
