Based on a comparison of summer 2024 and 2025 flight bookings, Japan’s Tokyo and Osaka top the list of destinations with the highest growth in visitors. The rankings show continued interest in Tokyo, which was second on the list last year.

Paris (France) ranked third, reflecting a drop in tourist numbers in the summer of 2024 due to the Summer Olympics, followed by Shanghai (China) in fourth place.

The next positions in the top 10 include Beijing (China), Seoul (South Korea) and Singapore, Palma de Mallorca and Madrid of Spain and Rio de Janeiro of Brazil. Notably, Nha Trang of Vietnam and Fukuoka of Japan ranked 11th and 13th respectively.

The report found that interest in Asian cities is mainly coming from Asian, European and American tourists. Asia also tops the list of summer destinations for Middle Eastern tourists, although interest in Thailand is growing. Summer flight bookings from Middle Eastern tourists have increased the most to Bangkok, followed by New York and then Phuket.

Tokyo is set to be the world’s most visited city by 2024, as tourists are drawn by the weakening yen. Last year, the Japanese currency hit its lowest level against the dollar since 1986.

According to a report by the Mastercard Economic Institute, exchange rate fluctuations affect Asian travelers more than other regions.
